stunned new 2000 3.0 litre V6 owner

Post by rustytractor » Mon Oct 21, 2013 7:21 am

Morning all,

After the theft of my previous car I needed an inexpensive big car to fill the gap and a couple of weeks ago a one owner 120k miles, full service history 2000 3.0 litre 24 XM turned up. I've never owned a Citroen before, know zero about this model of car - I just liked it and it suited me down to the ground even if only for a short while.

I'm totally stunned that a 13 year old car with this mileage can drive so unbelievably well and be so fast. Other than needing wheel balancing (done), a slight "bonk bonk bonk" noise from the front end over rough ground (sound like worn shock mounts on a normal car) and ideally new front discs it drives faultlessly and is without doubt the most comfortable car I've ever owned (the car stolen was a 2006 BMW 7 Series owned from new).

Navy bodywork is great except for the odd mark and some charming b*****d had keyed a door before I got the car - none of this originally bothered me as the car was a stop gap which I didn't think I'd like or particularly care about - unfortunately I really do !

Leather Interior is absolutely flawless, only issues are dodgy matrix display and intermittent passenger window which i think is a bad relay connection. I'll pull the display soon and see what the fault is ASAP and any advice re the suspension noise, display and window is much appreciated.

Minor issue - the "Exclusive" badge is missing from one of the front wings if anyone has one.

thanks,

Russell

Welcome!

I have become a very recent convert to the joys of V6 XM ownership - the total package is absolutely addictive. Some more technically capable people will be along soon I'm sure but it doesn't sound like a great list of things to sort.

Thanks Charles, I'm a member of various forums for my other, classic cars but never in a million years did I think I'd end up on a forum for this car.

I agree with you totally - I wish I'd discovered this before I doubt the 7 series !!

Hi Russell

The display is a stock failing with all Mk2 XM's.
Fixing is possible but a real pain and does not always work (instructions can be found on here).
If it really annoys unplug the connector for now so it stays blank.

Bonk bonk will most likely be the ball joints gone on the suspension drop links.
Easy to change but get genuine ones as most of the cheap aftermarket ones do not last.

Front disks will be the larger 288mm ones (there are two other sizes for XM's).
Make sure the anti rattle brackets on the pads are saved and reused if fitted (Citroen mod to design).

Intermittent window is most likely the switches or perhaps the wiring in the rubber flexi between doors and chassis.
Switch from a working rear door can be used to check this out (connections are the same but no illumination).
Passenger window is more often troublesome as the wiring has two switches in a chain and both must be ok.

If you do not work on the car yourself be careful with the choice of garage.
Ideally find a Citroen Indy as they will turn out cheapest in the long run.
Most garages will not have the experience needed for hydraulic Citroens.
Many of us feel the many Citroen dealers are now also in that category as well as tending to be expensive.

Get advice on here about check the state of the autobox oil.
Very important however good the service history is, paper proves nothing so check and change if needed.

Glad you are enjoying your new V6.

We can suggest when we know your location.

Hi Russell

Welcome to the forum. I discovered XMs 15 years or more ago and the only cars to anything like equal them were the CXs I had previously. I have run them continuously since although I run a C5 now I still have an XM and in many ways its better. I used them for work so did a lot of miles over the years and never found anything better. I went for economy rather than performance with the 2.1 diesel but still a lovely car to drive.

Nice car. Was this the one for sale in Enfield?

I agree with John regarding the drop links being the noise.

The car came via a friend of mine and was in the Enfield area. Was it up for sale somewhere and if so how much for ?

It was on Car and classic for a rather dreamy £2400.
