2lt XM Carburettor Model

Post by Terrence B » Sun Aug 31, 2014 6:50 pm

I am a proud owner of a September 1990 registered 2Lt XM fitted with a carburettor. It was about eighteen months old when I purchased it and I am wondering how many of this model are still in use in Britain. I have been informed there are six Mk1's but how many are carburetted? Has anyone any ideas or better still the answer? This has been a great car and still is. I use it more than my C5 2.2 HDI. : I would be grateful if you have the answer. Terrence B

welcome to the Forum, its good to have a new member with such a rare car!

At a guess i would say just yours is left, certainly i knew of no carb xm's on the road until you arrived.
Any chance of some pictures?

Welcome to the Forum Terrence and the carburettor XM is indeed a very rare beast and I have never seen one despite attendance at several CCC rallies! I am an early V6 enthusiast myself as you will see from my signature. It would be great to see some photos of the car and out of interest where are you based? Please could also confirm the RP number as the car must be quite early and do come to the 25th celebrations at RAF Cosford on 20/21st September. With regards, Matthew T.

Welcome Terrance to the Forum. Yes, you must bring it to Cosford in September. It will most likely be the only Carburettor there. Very rare model indeed. Amazing a carb model exists at all even!

There is the gold one rumoured to be living around the Cambridge area - although there's been no sight of it lately.

I have been in touch with Terence and the car is white and in Camberley, Surrey, so that makes two examples we know about! Hopefully some photos of the car and engine will follow in due course and I have encouraged attendance at XM25! Regards, Matthew T.

Interresting! For how long were carburettor-fitted cars fore sale in the UK? Due to enviromental regulations in Sweden at that time, cars with carburettor were almost impossible to import after 1988.

The 2 ltr Carburettor XM engine is described in the workshop manual XM 1 no. 7 dated 30th March 1990.
The engine is designated R2A. I will scan the 20 page booklet and add here when I get the time.
There is a 2 page coloured drawing of the engine bay in the early versions of the owners manual (XM-GB-5003 or earlier).
Two versions of this car were produced.
Y3AA 7CV France only, known as "XM Administration".
Y3AB 9CV known as "XM 2 litres SEDUCTION".
Hydractive Suspension was available as an Option only, cars had BX type suspension as standard.

I have details of the later availability of these cars.
For the 1991 Model year (Production started in July 1990) UK supply had ceased.
Y3AA France only.
Y3AB F, B & E which I interpret as France, Belgium and Spain.
