Many thanks for posting the photo link Dave and the car looks pretty good to me! Personally I would remove the aftermarket wheel arch chrome trims and replace the wheels as noted elsewhere and it was interesting to see the twin exhaust pipes and valance and Citroen rear number plate tail-blazer fitted. There are a few covers missing from the engine bay that hopefully can be found and replaced in due course with proper red ht leads. I also just noticed that the instrument binnacle is not quite in place! With regards, Matthew T.

Right. Yours looks like it just rolled out of the factory. Beautiful.
I thought mine looked a little rough but I had nothing to compare it to. I did a once-over in the dark to be certain that the car was functioning and had to take it at that.

This gives me another excuse not to pop open the bonnet when I show the car. I now understand the full reason why mine is missing that little metal plate, the one I thought had just the date of manufacture . . . It is probably a good idea not to push my luck to a general audience. "Weak hood release mechanism," will do.

I wondered about the rusting screws holding the chrome wheel arches.

Is that an aftermarket dip stick? The color is not as red as mine, but the plastic is intact.
The secondary hood release eats into the plastic to the point of failure. I epoxied a black painted aluminum plate under to replace the missing function on mine.

Thanks, Matthew.

Many thanks Dave and my engine compartment was quite rough when I bought the car and even now it is not quite as shiny as it looks! The dip stick is genuine Citroen, but for some reason later parts have orange rather than red plastic! Please do keep us posted on progress! I also noticed your car does not have the ugly additional large front and rear wing indicator repeaters you normally see on US import cars. With regards, Matthew T.

Mine clearly is not a US import car . . . I assume the head lamps are originals.

Update,

I have no parts catalogue. Can anyone give me the number of the Alternator belt for a 1990 XM V6? Mine has no numbers on it. I can likely cross reference a belt with a number and find one here in the US. I have all the other standard maintenance items ready to go just as soon as I can start the car and move it to a lift . . .

I have completed sorting out the small stuff, body and interior, while tinkering on the starting problem; I have cleaned many plug-in connections.

What I though was a week green light on the keyboard was just a green reflection. When the car starting (hot engine?) problem began I thought the light was still on but weak. It definitely is not on as I unplugged the keyboard and re-plugged it to no benefit. The green remained the same. No green or red light on the keyboard. Is that a useful clue to anyone?

John,

Can you find a page in Bulletin No. 23, 30 April 1991, 51, that list the parts associated with the numbers printed in red for pages 3 and 4, and pages 6 and 7? I am about to start a serious checking of the individual sensors and that requested information would be very helpful.

Thanks to all for following my adventures with another used Citroen,
Dave

Hi Dave

You need one of the V6 owners on here to give the actual sizing description of the alt belt.
The Citroen part numbers for belts do not reference the manufacturers standard belt coding.
Another example of the Citroen policy of "lets not help the customer do his own maintenance with cheap parts".

I will send you a PM (personal message) about the other information you asked for.
I suspect that some of the volume of scans I was posting last week may have helped the site fall over.
So I have curtailed posting extras for now.

John

The alternator belt depends on which alternator and equipment your car has fitted.

Setup an account on http://service.citroen.com/pages/index.jsp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and you can look for any part numbers you require.

I pulled the front right wheel and removed the plastic splash guards. It looks like I may be able to reach both belts without the use of a lift. When I get the alternator belt off I will try to match it by length. I am reluctant to announce to Citroen/France that I have one of their newer cars in the States . . .

The battery that came with the car is not holding a full charge, so this month's car expenditure will be a new battery; I can't imagine not being able to unlock the car. (I made a device to open DS hoods because I had a cable come loose, once.) I'm thinking next month will be a top down replacement starting with the engine ECU if I can not find another less expensive problem first. For example, I can not yet find a ground point or a fuse for the ECU circuit. All of the fuses that I have found are good.

Question: can ECU's be ordered with the keyboard already disabled?

John,
I am so thankful for the pages you posted. If you sent me the numbering page through PM, I don't know how to access it.

Thanks to all.

I don't think you will encounter any problem in registering yourself with Service Citroen, as an "independent repairer". Vehicles needing repair end up virtually anywhere on the globe, unrelated to original sales. I'd just go ahead. The amount of vehicle-specific (via VIN) info there is invaluable, for your own and other vehicles/models.

You should be able to find an ecu with a known code or otherwise one that has been coded out Dave and I would explore German ebay first. The Pug 605 24v had the same set up of course. With regards, Matthew T.
