XM in Califorina????

Post by citroenfa » Wed Feb 15, 2017 9:22 pm

Hi All,

Thanks to John, I was finally able to log in :). Have one of only 50 or so XM's imported to the US in the early 90's. Not new to hydraulic Cits, however - having driven and owned them since the early 60's. Right now trying to figure out some niggling electrical issues (1992 V6 - 12 valve) loaded with everything. Overall car runs quite well, just some electrical control issues.

Take care,

Steve Hammond - Sylmar, CA (USA).

A Very Warm Welcome to you Steve, although there is probably more sun in California than the UK at present! It would be great to see some photos of your car and as I you will note from my signature I am a big enthusiast for the early XM V6! There is a lot of expertise here on the Forum to help fix your niggles. With regards, Matthew T.

A real welcome, Steve. A rarity indeed, and something of a head-turner, I'll bet.
Look forward to seeing some pics of the car 'loaded with everything', as exports for US always were!
Would be interesting if you could post the car's VIN/chassis number, which would let us download the car's ex-factory spec.
Hope we can help sort the electrical issues.

Hi All -

Thank you for the very nice welcome.

Not seen (along side the house) are the 1972 DS 21 BVH (642,000 total miles on chassis - 143,000+ miles since its restoration in 2003), a 1969 1/2 Break as well as a 1973 SM :). Yes we are just a bit fanatical about Cits. I drove to Canada in summer of 1963 in a DS 19 Grand Route. Was on a US cycling team that raced in the Tour du St. Lawrence. The longest stage race in the world outside of the Tour de France at the time. My parents bought a 61 ID19 (manual steering) that fall, which became my car. I replaced it in 1968 with a brand new D Special. That was later traded in for a 72 DS21. The DS I kept until the mid 80's when I acquired the SM. In 2003 I salvaged from being destroyed the 72 DS 21 BVH. Completely rebuilt it mechanically, upping the compression ratio to 9.2:1 and having the cam modified. Fastest 21 I have ever driven and can give a well sorted out SM fits to about 80 mph or so :). In 2013 acquired the wagon and then in 2015 got the XM and the 2CV. The XM was acquired from fellow SoCalCit club members (they were the second owners) and the 2CV came with my current living companion, a lovely lady who shares my passion for all things Citroen.

I have a lot of experience with the hydraulic bits - rebuild and refurbish the older style suspension/accumulator spheres as well as re-charge the non-rebuildable units for fellow owners as well as HP pumps (7 piston) and steering racks, engine mounts, pressure regulators and the old style 3 groove water pumps for A/C equipped D's.

Getting late here in SoCal so will sign off.

Take care all and again a big Thank You for the wonderful welcome.

Steve

What a collection! Your partner 'passed the test' too!

The VIN number could be a digit short - not recognised by service.citroen.
Tried VF7Y3AG0001AG3506, but got an RP of 4791 (= 21.12.1989), and sparse vehicle details.
RP 5099 = 25.10.1990.

Nice looking XM. Was that the one for sale about 12 months ago?

As a personal preference I would be looking to source some original Italia wheels, as opposed to the later V6 Exclusive wheels it has on at present.

I agree. That VIN is also listed as a manual gearbox, which I would think is rarer than a rare thing in USA.

Odd things can happen to USA imported car VIN to make them old enough to import.

Hi All,

ORG I missed took the '1' for a '9' - actually 5091.....

Attached are pics of the Vin tag and California Reg sticker on the car.

Got to run - lots of 'stuff' to do this morning. The 9 hour time difference can be a PITA :)

Take care,
Steve

There should be the original VIN stamped into the scuttle plate upper flange about 1 foot from the (in your case) passenger side. Loof where the right suspension sphere is close tot eh scuttle flange then towards the centre a bit and you should see an unpainted section.

The VIN you have is older than the car. ;)
