Series 1 XM are definitely firmer than a BX. The system will be in soft mode when t he engine is running and the car stationery, if you switch off and leave for 30 seconds it will switch to firm mode, with a clunk, at which point it becomes very firm indeed.

The height control lknob has to be lifted vertically before it can move along the track. It may not be jammed.

If the car has sat for 8 years I suspect the spheres may be flat, in which case it will be very firm, with no movement and a hard jiggly ride.

The top plastic bit is broken off by someone that tried , I used a plier and it would not budge neither up not back/forth.

One wouold think, but because the membrane presses to the steel cas and the gas pressure is at it's towest, the spheres can retain a surprising amount of pressure.

If you are in XM-remote area (we are here), you might find it convenient to buy some regassing kit.
http://www.tecnosir.com/attrezzature_c720.php
All you need is their re-gas tool C720, and Valprex 2000 valves (pk.5, 9mm for XM). Cylinder of nitrogen gas from your local supplier.
Allows you to check sphere pressures, maintain sphere pressure and be self-sufficient.

Search Tecnosir or re-gassing on this site.

Even so, we don't know how old the spheres were before the car was laid up, I'd be very surprised if there was any pressure left in them.

Got friend ex Citroen tech to bring his Sphere tester, amazingly both front Spheres tested perfect! Also at normal height with engine running,I could depress front and back easily, not as soft as BX but seems good.
Went on small test drive and rides nice.Noticed the float level on reservoir stuck at high point, looked in from filler cap and the level seemed less than half at high setting so added a liter. Will remove and clean, hope it comes good. The height control I was worried about seems just some plastic jamming in console, was able to move easy, just the springy bit while lifting latch ain't felt.Starting good after I enhanced the injection earth signal.ABS fault showed, possibly dry solder in module.Next to do steering boots,service,a/c gas.The blower seems erratic and worked at speed 4 only.Found my friend had this Tricolour drape in boot!

Theres nowt wrong with the level meter.. you be suprised how low the level needs to go before the indicator drops.. the tank needs to be only half full for the level indicator to stay at the top.. remove the two connectors to it.. twist it and lift it and you will see the level drop.. it doesnt stick its a very simply rod with a plastic float on the bottom... nothing much to it..
