Not Completely New but waking up!

Post by dcz1643 » Fri Mar 24, 2017 10:47 am

Hi All...
I am not completely new here, as I have been a member for many years but I am waking up again. I have a 1990 XM V6 SEi, which I have owned for many years and has been dry stored in my garage for about 16 years. It is in reasonable condition, all things considered but is not without its issues. The starter motor is broken (the original reason I took it off the road), the suspension fluid drained out through a seal on the inside front wheel and the brakes are stuck on the offside front wheel. I would appreciate any advice regarding waking the beast up and and putting it back on the road, including places where I can buy parts. I have uploaded some pictures of my XM, from when I last pulled it out of the garage about 2 years ago.

Welcome back!..Wow...Another early V6 surfaces. You must get it fixed up, it looks like a nice one.
I note you have an original European car of the year sticker in the rear window. Very rare!

There are a few on here who are V6 experts, so I am sure they will help you out.

Cheers Russ, thanks for taking the time to reply. I didn't even think about the car of the year sticker on the rear screen. It is my intention to put the car back on the road and then I might go for a more extensive restore job, including new paint. As you say, there are not that many of these things about these days!

Welcome Derek and it is indeed exciting to see another early V6, and for me especially being an auto with the original interior pre-wood trim. As you may have spotted, I am a big early V6 fan and my collection includes an auto of very similar vintage and colour. I am not 100p/c sure if your car is pearl or platinum and I would be really interested to know the chassis and/or RP numbers to compare! Hopefully I and others will be able to assist you returning her to the road and what is your location? Another possibly to meet and chat would be at the CCC X rally next month. With regards, Matthew T.

Hi Matthew, that is an excellent and exciting range of XM's and the car in the photo is amazing.
I don't know the official colour of my car, I have always called it silver, I don't think it is platinum as it is not dark enough.
Any help/advice regarding getting it back on the road would be very much appreciated, particularly sourcing parts.
I live in Teesside, so I don't know how that fits into things?
I will get the numbers off the car tomorrow and send them to you.
Cheers....Derek

Many thanks for those kind remarks Derek and I think your car must be Silver, also known as Pearl Grey, for which the code is ETP. My early auto is in Platinum or ETB and the code can be found just in front of the battery. I have quite a lot of V6 parts to keep my cars on the road and I can also advise with sourcing, for example a new starter motor! Although I am in Norfolk I occasionally visit Saltburn for my work, so very close to you! It will be good to know the age of your V6, which must be early from the interior, including the red badge steering wheel, and also to check the registration date and mileage covered. The auto option was introduced here in March 1990 and my car was registered in June. With regards, Matthew T.

wow another early V6 being resurrected! Please do let us know your RP number and colour code, prehaps you'd also like to add your car to our members register? Best of luck with the recommissioning.

There is also a weekend event at Wetherby Racecourse in May.

Another 12v shows.. I see one Pic shows shes a H plate 1990..

Possibly sticky parking brake mechanisem if she was parked with the brake applied.. or if the brakes are on after starting up the brake pedal pivot could be siezed. . Holding the brake on.. I to also have a number of V6 12v stuff up here on Anglesey... as I had a 12v auto, but still have a V6 24v Manual... 1991..

Here she is on her better days..
Image

** Oooo fancy that, the original reg on my car was H326 also!

Despite yours being sat, id still be inclined to check the under body for rot, and a visual wont be enough... check the box sections around the floor, behind the front jacking points, and outer cills...

The 12v V6s are now seemingly just as rare as the 24v Ones now..
