I am not sure about that last comment Paul as I think rhd cars are really the imposters!!
However, I do agree your 24v is the oldest currently known on the Forum! I think the RP on the Citroen pre-registered 'G' plate 24v that I broke was later.

Well, considering I posted this 3 years ago, I must admit I have not done any work on the car. I still have it but a Triumph Spitfire came along and I have put a lot of time and effort into that. However, I have now retired and I am returning to my beloved XM. I have a few questions to ask of you guys with the knowledge. Firstly, I have managed to lose the key, I can't find it anywhere. I obviously have the reg and vin number but not the key number, does anyone know where I could get a new key from, or will I need to change the ignition barrel and the door locks? Secondly, I need a new starter motor. I have been in touch with a seller on eBay regarding a new starter motor for a V6 but he confirmed it would not fit my car. Does anyone have any details regarding the starter motor I require. The third thing is regarding the fluid leak on the suspension, if anyone has any ideas about how to recommission this after being parked up for 19 years, I would be very grateful. I am not sure if I should split these questions into 3 new posts but many Thanks in advance....Derek

Personally I would get the starter refurbished as aftermarket new items can be a bit... cheap, in build if not price.

The leak behind the front wheel will be a strut return pipe, these are still available from GSF and are plentiful on eBay, best to replace both sides as they perish with age.

Brakes are fairly straight forward as I’m sure you know, the keys I am not sure about but I am sure someone else will be along to advise on them, not sure if you can still order from the dealer or not.

After all that time, worth renewing the LHM (after the new strut return pipes, and checking there are no more leaks), but do it with Total Hydraurincage. 1 x 5L will be enough. This will clean deposits and sedimentation from the system. Search 'Hydrauricage' on here for where to get it, and how to use it (if needed).

Ignore me if this is a stupid suggestion, but if you can't get a new key from the dealer with the VIN #, wouldn't it be better to get a locksmith to open the lock and cut a new key? It would presumably help if you knew the right blank to start with, but that shouldn't be too difficult to identify.

I was able to get a Sydney locksmith to cut a spare key for my Xantia, and it had to be cut on both axes like my Xm key. Admittedly I was able to give him a key to copy - I've not asked a locksmith to unlock any of my cars.

You do know that as soon as you fit new key barrels, the old key will turn up?

You should be able to obtain a new key from your local Citroen dealer.
You will probably need to show proof of ownership, so take proof of identity and the car Registration document.

The remote plip is likely to be more of a challenge.
