Post by Richbxm » Mon Feb 12, 2018 7:52 pm

Hi all, just got my hands on a 1996 2.1td VSX Estate. Needs a bit of work and the substance that should be diesel but isnt removing from the tank as its causing it to not start.

Which pump does it have, Bosch mechanical, or Lucas Epic?

If Bosch, check the filter primer pump is actually pumping fuel with the output disconnected and a suitable receptical placed to catch fuel. If not, the primer diaphragm is probably split.

Both systems use suction to draw fuel from the tank, so check for any air leaks.

If it's a Purflux fuel filter, all the parts are available as spares, including the priming diaphragm/kit, the complete head, and the entire unit.

Best car of the range ;) I've had six or seven of them, most were '96s and most had the reg 'YBL' I suspect yours might have, I think they were actually made in '95, hence the Bosch pump. Enjoy.

If really gungy, might be worth removing the tank and cleaning it out. Wonder what it had been run on... :?
You might be able to run up the engine with a small diesel feed directly to the fuel filter (the pump should suck it up), rather than risk pulling the goo out from the tank and along all the lines. Need to 'catch' excess return fuel from the pump, unless you just let it go back to the main tank, of course.

Hi. Its a PWW reg. it looks like it had been sat in a timewarp. Only looks a couple of years old. it was originally sold about 12 miles from where I live at a garage in Snaith. It needs a few annoying bits as well as the none starting resolving. Its only just done 90k. Im quite taken with it already.

Plan is to flush out the pump and injectors using a fuel can once ive cleaned the filter out. Then i can use the primer to force it throughinstead of the car fuel supply. Then clean everything else out once i know it runs

Do post a photo or three, if you can. Good to see an estate being rescued and sorted!

Very nice. My last one rusted away. Unusual for a 'P' reg to have a Bosch pump.
