Clear coat, it was the worst paint decision ever for Australia, they all peel under our extremely hot Sun.
And thanks for your great advice about the chrome strips Dieselman. They are coming up awesome.
All metallic paints have to have clearcoat, otherwise the aluminium particles corrode.
Solid paints technically don't need clearcoat, but they will fade and bloom if not coated.

Thanks Pshemsky. I somewhat agree. I imagine that the timing belt isn't cheap to replace and the transmission, whilst its good now, there will come a time that it has to be checked. I would normally put in a nanotechnology which cleans the tranny, but as it takes a different fluid I am not sure its compatible. I've been thinking about removing the dead transmission from the spare and getting that fixed so if mine dies it can be replaced much quicker.
There is a car show locally soon, I might take the XM. I think its time it the XM is brought to public acknowledgement. See if it takes attention away from the American cars.

Thanks again for your wisdom Dieselman. When the Sun is up I shall take some pics of the strips.

The correct ATF for the Zf-HP20 is any equivelant ofthe Total product listed below: Essensially Dexron 3 equivelant. PSA type 339 ATF.

Product line: Total FLUIDE G3

Manufacturer Release: 339 Typ V1,339 TypZ1, VT H55.633539 (G607), ZF TE-ML 04D, ZF TE-ML 14A, ZF TE-ML 17C, ZF TE-ML03D

Oil - manufacturer recommendation: Allison C-4, Dexron IIIG, Mercon, Volvo 97341

If that's the case I will trial the product, when international flights return to normal, and let all know how it goes. Though when nanotechnology for cars first made their grand entrance to the world, so I was amongst the first to trial it, and I did lots of experiments. My little Suzuki Carry van, Bedford in UK, with its 970cc engine, which had always had a top speed of 100kph from new, transformed itself and would do 125kph with 338,000 km on it with one nanotechnology product. But no one in Australia was interested. "Yeah mate, heard it all before." Was the common reply. It cost me a lot of money to experiment to help others, so I haven't done any since 2016. But this Transmission needs a cure. Maybe it just needs a bloody good inner cleanse.

The reason automatic gearboxes are so fickle about the type of fluid used, is due to the adhesive used to bond the friction materials.

Incorrect fluid can cause the bond to fail, with obvious consequences.

Cool. Great news. That puts me at comfort. The original owner sold it to me because he believed it was failing. After I bought it we took it for a drive. He said. "There seems to be nothing wrong with the transmission, I think it was all in my head."
Now knowing what the issue is, and knowing that he has always used the correct fluid since he originally had it rebuilt, I only have to concern myself with the timing belt

THE INFORMATION ABOVE IS TOTALLY INCORRECT
None of the above oils should ever go anywhere near a 4HP20 traansmission.

The only fluid for this transmission is ESSO/Mobil LT 71141 which is available from PSA under part number 9730.AE

The main reason reason that the 4HP20 is very sensitive to oil type is that it has a lock-up torque converter which (for smoothness) is often run with a 4% slippage. A Dextron fluid has the wrong friction coefficient and causes the lock-up clutch to wear, which eventually clogs the (effectively) non-replaceable oil filter to clog up, starving the transmission of fluid pressure, leading to a variety of secondary (often catastrophic) failures.

It is probably a good idea to change the transmission fluid (with LT 71141), but sadly this does not remove the particles which are already starting to block the filter, and the transmission will fail, usually somewhere between 150,000 and 300,000 km.

To change the transmission oil filter, the transmission must be removed from the car. On most models with this transmission, this requires also removing the engine, but I think (having removed and engine transmission from one of these) that there should be just enough clearance on an XM to split the transmission from the engine and lift it separately.

If you want an idea of what is inside the transmission, see CitroJims old site at: http://eastment.net/4hp20/4hp20_introduction.htm (note the navigation is at the bottom right of the page).

Hi All,

Just hopping on the back of this, I need to buy auto gearbox fluid for my 1994 Mk2 2.1TD, with BVA 4HP18. Can I get opinions on the correct fluid type?

Thanks.

A search has revealed Total ATX:

But a confirmation would be welcome. Also, how much does it hold?

Thanks.

The 4HP18 can use any dex II compatible fluid, so there are lots of alternatives.
