I mentioned on May 1st that I had managed to extract the P?S ram. I can report that it is back in, and appears to be functioning! Have not put the wheels back on yet, as I have a small problem, which I am hoping that the cognoscenti of this forum can help me with.

While flailing around trying to tighten up the hydraulic pipes, I managed to dislodge this clip:

Can someone explain where it belongs and how to put it there? I believe it came off the lower part of the steering column, which I can feel but not see. Needless to say, I can neither soo not feel any spot that seems to need such a clip!

Regards

Alec

That clip holds the heat shield tight to the steering rack.
The heat shield has two holes in it that the ends of the clip fit into, the clip goes round the pinion valve.

Ensure the heat shield doesn't rub on the steering column once fitted.

It is awkward to fit, but do-able. Engage one end of the clip then tension it and engage the other...one handed.

Thanks Dieselman - as you said awkward! And I had to do it left handed! Anyway, all was as you described - found the holes after some careful feeling around, then just as I started to think that I would never be able to do it, the clip popped into place!

Next job looks to be an LHM leak from the regulator - is there a usual suspect in this area? Should I perhaps be looking at a kit for the regulator?

Also, I have noticed that the pulley on the LHM pump wobbles from side to side while spinning. I can't feel any free-play, but I'm guessing that I would have to release the tension in the belt before I could expect to feel any movement. I presume it could either be a bent pulley or wear in the pump? The pump does leak a little LHM - not bad, but something I'd like to fix. Should I obtain a 2nd hand pump, fit all new O-rings, and then swap it in?

Cheers

Alec

Clean it up to ensure that it is regulator itself, not one of the connections...

Leaks are generally caused by o-rings hardening with age, if you search this site, I am sure that you can find descriptions of the process.

The ES9 engine used in XMs and Xantia has a unique pump which has a pulley held on with 3 small screws, maybe these are loose?

These pumps are difficult to find second had, as they only were fitted to a few hundred cars sold in RHD markets, and only a few thousand world-wide.

Ass an aside, the reason for the detachable pulley seems to be that in the Xantia, the bonnet opening is not wide enough to fit or remove the engine with the pump fitted, unless the pump pulley is removed.

The most common leakage around the pump is the o-ring under the high pressure outlet valve, this is fairly easily replaced with the pump in-situe.

Thanks - as always a mine of valuable information! I was (obviously) unaware that my pump was "special" - will certainly try and get a socket on those little bolts.

Very alarming that the pump is so rare...

Found the little bolt heads - I made it 4?

Anyway, 3 were nice and tight, just nipped them up a little, but the 4th was loose, and after about a turn or so didn't seem to be getting any tighter.

Pretty sure it's stripped (not me boss - it was like that) - so am guessing I've found the source of the wobble

You have counted correctly, there are 4 bolts!

I have never needed to investigate a thread repair, but it is probably amenable to a helicoil or similar.

If you are feeling lucky, you can search for the pump under Citroen part number 4007Q9 but I have not spotted any actually existing for a year or two.

At one stage I was convinced that the transmission was leaking oil, but I have now realised that the oil collecting in the drip tray is green :o . After using a significant amount of spray degreaser, I have concluded that it is coming from the regulator.

In fact I have narrowed it down to the pressure release bolt. Tightening it a little more has had little or no effect, so it's obviously time for a regulator overhaul. Since the pump also needs attention, and the alternator has had oil dripped on it (experience has taught me what the end result of that will be), I am thinking that I need to start assembling parts and tray and attend to all those jobs at once.

Are there kits for regulator & pump overhaul? Obviously getting a kit makes much more sense than tracking down individual O-rings etc.

Cheers

Alec

Under the regulator pressure relief (depressurising) bolt there should be a ball bearing, which the bolt presses against a seat.
Wonder whether it is still in place? Or damaged/dirty?
There are warnings not to undo the bolt by more than about 1 turn, in case the ball falls out and gets lost.
Unusual to get a leak from just there.

Can post a diagram of the regulator innards, if you need it.

The V6 pump is unique and must not be mixed with any other engined car as the pump regulator is external to the pump (not system regulator) let's not get mixed up. The pump valve is on the passenger side of the front subframe..

I'm not sure if the 2.5td pumps are the same or not. They are visually but not sure on the valve regulator..
