Another Another XM also says hello from Spain

Ok... This time is gonna be a bit weird. You probably remember my neat XM TCT that's under restoration right now, well, a friend of mine saw my car and after years thinking on getting himself a CX, he ended up with an XM. Only problem is... that particular unit (early S1) is pretty destroyed. A suspension cup has jumped and is being supported by a chain, the interior is a bit of a mess, needs a full repaint, parking brake is not working, AC is not working and is the lowest of the lowest trims... I mean, the very lowest. No 13th window, no front fog lamps, no electric seats, no onboard computer, no front glovebox on the doors, no space to put stuff under the radio, no timer for the wipers, no electric mirrors... you get the idea. At least it was cheap, but I'm not exactly convinced. Anyway, thought it might be funny to drop it here, have fun looking at it.

...and no Hydractive either. Well, a lot less to go wrong!
What is the engine? Surely not a 2.0i carburettor?
Is he going to sort that strut top?
A big BX :?

The engine picture isn't very clear, but it looks like a 2.0 injection.

It will be interesting to see how the sans-hydractive car compares in ride quality and handling.

At least the previous owner fitted the chain before the strut went through the bonnet and it appears to have A/c.

That shouldn't take much sorting out...there is no rust to sort and he wont have many technical questions...

I'll take better photos from the engine and post them tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it's 2.0L injection.
Yes, the strut is going to be sorted out.
And yes, it does have A/C but it doesn't work. Yes this will also be fixed.

If you can get the VIN, we can pull up the factory spec - although these can be a bit brief for some S1.

Is it just me, or do others find a "base model" quite attractive.?? To me, there's a purity about them...

The lack of hydractive and equipment puts me off.
Xm are meant to be the haut de gamme, bristling with technology.
Low spec doesn't fit that bill.

Well, at least there wasn't an XM Utility (van) version - blanked-out rear side windows and no back seat.
Or was there?

Any luck with the VIN number for that one, Jaki?

A van version! What a thing that would have been!

I'm on another forum where many members celebrate the simplicity of base models, and while I note the opinion of a friend from way back that 'electric windows are just another thing to go wrong'...

I
Like
Toys

Sunroofs. Leather. Aircon. Full electrics pack. Cruise. Heated seats. Heated mirrors. Heated washer jets. Folding door mirrors. Turbos. Sat nav. Trip computers. Compasses. Temperature gauges and displays. I want it all*.

I like stock but I'd happily upgrade my SED with heated seats (front AND back, if I could get them) and cruise control. And I've considered one of those mad security systems for another of my cars - one that does full remote window and sunroof control and remote starts would be nice. But I think that's a bridge too far for a car as complex as the XM. Imagine trying to fix a fault on one so equipped...

* But not an electronic parking brake. They're the devil's work.

Along with dual-mass flywheels.
