The photo above (elbow on roof) says it all, Matthew. Sheer satisfaction!

That's great news that the car went so well. Glad you had a good time, it looked like a fun challenge.

Classic Challenge 2017

Post by sdelasal » Mon Jun 12, 2017 8:59 pm

Hello, just to say that a great time was had completing the Challenge event with Matthew. The car was a pleasure to drive and totally reliable and was a credit to matthews' work. The initial three nights were memorable for being too too wet for camping in a £20 single skin pop up tent :-), but we all managed. Thereafter, it was sun and some great drives. Navigation kept us on our toes too! Good company, and it was good to meet folks from the bx forum as well as Paul in his black XM. Finally, a big thanks to Phil Chidlow for organising the event. Steve

p.s I still fancy a nice diesel manual with a straight body :-)

Thanks for your comments chaps and I was very grateful to Steve for accompanying me on the trip and sharing the experience, including the driving and costs. There were a few stressful moments of course when the satnav misbehaved and fuel ran low, but on the whole we muddled along well. The company was so friendly with our shared enthusiasm for the marque and we enjoyed the companionship of our BX Club friends and other models. As always Phil Chidlow did a really brilliant job with organising the route etc. and got the balance just right by providing enough structure but also freedom to go elsewhere if desired. Regard, Matthew T.

Just to confirm that our XM count during around 2,000 miles of driving across between Calais and Cannes including several larger conurbations was around ten cars, which would indicate even in France the model is now quite rare. Perhaps more significantly only four S1 were seen, of which three were in museums while the other did not appear in regular use! I now attach further photos with notes including from our two museum visits and would welcome any comments. Regards, Matthew T.

A carb XM would be a pain to drive due to being rather gutless.

Museum ones look good. Quite familiar infact!

The carb one is an interesting beast. The huge space where the hydractive and engine ECUs should be is strange to see. Good spot for oil and LHM bottles!

At least the 2.0 was a manual Will and the two carb BX on the Challenge seemed to go quite well! The V6 was a matching pair to the car we took Russ, although the 2.0 is sable rather than champagne ! Both the Castellane Museum cars were quite tidy, except the 2.0 was a bit 'wrong' with the later wheel trims and bumper. The inclusion of the two XM in the display towards the back of the hall also seemed slightly 'token' and the V6 was without a title or notes. I agree that the missing ecus do look a bit odd! Sable is a lovely colour, i'd have it in a flash...even with S2 wheeltrims fitted.
