Well after final fettleing and prep.. we went for mot today.. and got a nice PASS..
the car was a pleasure and joy to drive.. and i throughly enjoyed taking her on the 20 mile trip for mot..
Its been a learning curve and enjoyment dooing this instead of body work. Ive enjoyed most of it. Couple of small issues that werent so.. but the final drive was really worth waiting for..
So.. yet another project comes to a close. The car is ready for collection. And will no doubt appear at future rallies..

So how do you rate the ES9 with manual transmission compared to the PRV?

Didnt drive it for long enough... but the prv is louder makes a better noise and possibly a bit quicker..
However.. as the esj is cable gearchange that makes a massive difference to the driving experiance.. if only the later box was fitted to the prv engine.. id seriously consider an upgrade to my 24v. The clutch is quite heavy on mine though that could be down to cable or quadrant age..

As far as I can tell the box Paul was supplied to use was an ML5 box.
The Pug coupe had that box mated to ESJ engines.
The earlier MG5 box is the manual one that fits directly to a PRV engine.
Plenty of MG5 boxes available as it was used with the 2.5TD.

Well gents just to complete the story....... I collected my S2 24V from Paul on Friday. I’m now a very happy chap to be driving an XM again and to have a manual ES9 thats geared like a sports car is brilliant
I never have liked auto boxes and always thought it was a shame Citroen didn’t bring a RHD manual version into the UK. Anyway thanks to Paul and his sheer perseverance and enthusiasm there is one here now!
I recall at a Citroen rally somewhere about 3 years ago saying to Paul, do you think a manual conversion would be doable. He said he didn’t see why not, given that it’d been done on a few Xantias but there were a few unknowns and it’d need to be thought through. That was me probably tempting fate and sure enough a few thousand miles later the auto box packed up one morning on the A14. The car went backwards, but that was it. I thought to myself well I really don’t want to get the autobox overhauled even though that’s the easiest option as I don’t like autos; and I don’t want to scrap the car as it’s in very good condition. So I thought well it’s going to have to be a manual conversion.
I stared at it for a few days and thought well I could take the auto box out and bolt a flywheel and manual box on, but then what about the clutch, pedal box and gearchange? Fortunately there were quite a few 406 V6 gearboxes and engines around for not too much money, so that made it seem a lot more possible. Anyway the rest is history and with huge thanks to Paul this XM is now back on the road with a very nice manual gearchange, hydraulic clutch and pretty impressive performance for an old banger

That should be a good car to drive. LHD Series 2 V6 were commonly available with a manual box and the ES9 engine.
I guess Citroen UK were trying to position the V6 Xm against Mercedes E class, of which 90%+ used to be auto.
The cable gearchange and hydrulic clutch should be nice to live with.
