Another early car appears!!

I just spotted this on the Bay that could be a nice project for someone!

The listing is fairly comprehensive and the buyer is open to offers. I note the reg. is very similar to press cars of the period with a Reading area code, so probably first owned by Citroen UK. The rear plate and window sticker show 'Citroen Olds', Puddletown, which seems to be in Dorset. There is a red badge steering wheel although the sun-roof is factory fitted.

It also happens to be located fairly close to me in North Suffolk and I could probably find time to call and assess if required.

I love early cars, but the 2.0i engine puts me off a bit. Overall it looks ok, only general tidying. The MOT history is pretty revealing though. Been a fair bit of welding required for the last several MOT's.

this has been for sale since the summer i went and looked when he first put it up
never owned an xm before but i think theres something very wrong with the suspention seems very hard also diddnt look to me like the front went to the right level looked as though it should be lower but perhaps thats just me
seats are fine although dash is a little tired somethings been stuck to it in the past and left a mess
exterior also tired more-so than pictures reveal
engine seemed fine

i only realy went to see it to find out what the ride in these is like having never been in one before but this one felt no better than my gti-6
i am looking for an xm but want a later one with digital climate control cruse control etc

Hard ride and incorrect ride height are generally easily sorted. Hard ride on an early car is normally the spheres are flat. There could be a problem with the Hydractive system, which defaults to hard if disabled, or engine off, but that isn't particularly likely on an early car with H1 hydractive.
The ride height is controlled by adjusting the clamp on the anti-roll bar. If cars have been sitting for a long time, they generally ride high as the linkage rod deforms slightly.

Early XM ride can seem a bit brittle at low speeds, but as speed increases they get more compliant. Later XM use larger corner spheres with more relaxed damping to counter this. Technically, one could tune XM suspension to personal preference by selecting different spheres and making adjustments to the damping orifaces. Different brands of spheres make cars ride better, or worse.

Pretty well all early cars should now be regarded as project cars. If it's not rotten, it's worth saving, there are so few left.

Regarding the dashboard, my preference is for the rotary dials, over the push buttons.

Rotary dials suit the dashboard better and allow finer control of air direction. Appearance is the real preference.

I've looked at the pictures again and it is riding high at the front...just needs adjustment. The disk stuck to the dash is for a phone mount. It's not much work to swap that part of the dashboard, it screws on.

The overall condition is about what a standard 27 year old Xm is like. No reason it couldn't be either a daily driver, or a project to turn into a nice, early car.

No quite Dean.. no XM had cruise from 89 to 92... cruise was not offered at all untill the main lights switch was moved from the roatry switch to the light stalk switch... as the roatry switch is where the cruise leaver was then fitted....
