Welcome to the forum, Alex.
On a Series 2 non-functioning ABS isn't a problem as sensors, if required, are available. The only other common fault with ABS is the relay on the top of the valve block having dry joints.
I have to say, it was very brave admitting to being a friend of James'...

Thanks for the welcome Dieselman, am I mad or am I mad in both wanting an XM and being a friend of James!

. Sorry James -you know I’m kidding
I have been speaking to Alan by email, apparently the abs works? I’ve long been an admirer of the XM but never given serious thoughts to owning one.
Tell me, what’s the specialist support like in the Southwest which is where I live.

It depends on were you are. It is there...but in reality, you won't need it.
That particular car is in exceptional condition and is very quet and smooth for a 2.1TD.
There are members in the South West who could advise who to use if necessary, but Citroen hydraulics are usually very reliable...the rest is standard PSA stuff.
If you know which way to turn a spanner, you will find working on an XM pretty simple. Engine access for some jobs can be a bit tight, but otherwise pretty easy.
The XM is quite a step up from a Xantia in terms of presence and driver appeal.
Having driven that car, I can vouch for it's condition and driveability. It is impressively quiet and smooth.

That’s very reassuring, thanks Dieselman. I was a trained mechanic and Mot tester in the 1980s, just no experience of later cars. This forum does feel very welcoming and helpful, much like my very familiar Saab world

Re: W reg 1999 Xm 2.1 Td Auto Available...
The information given on ABS applies to the two Bendix systems as fitted to Mk 1 XM's and just a few early Mk 2 XM's.
Parts and spares are few and virtually all secondhand often with repair needed.
Most Mk 2 XM's were fitted with the Teves Mk IV ABS.
The final few XM's built were fitted with Teves Mk 20 ABS.
Most likely the version fitted to this particular car.
Spares for these Teves systems are now difficult to find.
For example rear sensors are no longer available.
The generic types of ABS listed above were fitted to other PSA models but this does not help the spares situation much.
This is because versions were modified to suit each model.
So it is not just a case of a scrap yard visit for secondhand bits.
Most scrapyards these days crush XM's on arrival due to the poor call for bits.

I'm confused.
It is the early Bendix sensors which are hard to come by, not later Teeves ones.
I have just checked Teeves later items and the rears are readily available from a number of suppliers.
Front: Citroen 454552 @£40
Rear: Citroen 454553 @£60
Rear post Rp 7290: 454565 @£42
The Teeves Mk20 system is used a many manufacturers cars, probably most European cars produced since 1996.

Hi Alex, I know James also, he's very good at getting Citroen's in the classic car press!Lxrnkn wrote:Hi,
My name is Alex and I'm new to the forum and have never Owned a Citroen. James Walshe is a friend of mine from the Saab Club where I am very well known and I have several Saab cars. If my 2-stroke sells shortly I have room in my storage for another car!
I've been considering Citroen for a while now, and along with my Friend Lance Cole, James has got be interested in owning an XM ( I didn't need much encouragement tbh, the company I used to work for had two new series 1 cars) to go with my Saab collection, and this car looks just the ticket? My only concern is the non functioning ABS and the next MOT test?
In a previous life I was a car mechanic, but have little experience of Citroen, although I have worked on 2Cvs, GS and have MOT'D a few of the other models.
It may of course be that this particular car is now sold?
Best wishes
Alex
There are a few of us XM owners in the South West, which area are you in? I'm in Somerset.
