2.1TD 1994 Mk2

Post by Lwdajo » Thu Mar 08, 2018 7:07 pm

Hi All,

I've not had an XM for along time, but I've just acquired VIN: VF7Y4TD0000TD0425 with a new MOT and drove it 100 miles back home today, parked it up and not examined it further.

Current issues I am aware of:

1) NS window doesn't operate from either passenger or driver side.

2) Central locking doesn't operate. Previous owner removed the central locking fuse from the fuse box in the passenger well because the system was repeatedly locking and unlocking. I'll put the fuse back tomorrow and see for myself.

3) Suspension is hard. Whilst thinking about a sphere change, I discovered in the manual that the central locking fuse is also the Hydractive fuse. What suspension do I have without this fuse in place? Should I get the central locking system fixed before investigating the suspension?

Any help gratefully appreciated, thanks,
Lee

The window has probably been disconnected due to cable breakage, which is common series 2 cars.

Central locking bouncing will be a door lock failure, either the motor or the door closed detector contacts inside the lock. At an outside chance it could be a poor connection to the lock or door loom.

If the hydractive fuse is removed the suspension will be hard due to running on the corner spheres only.

All in, a pretty short snagging list.

Fit the fuse and see what effect it has. I would leave a door lock disconnected and have hydractive than the other way round.

Thanks for replying so quickly Dieselman.

A short list, agreed! I'll pop a fuse in a see what happens. If only the corner spheres are being used would that explain also why I can't hear any clicking, from the accumulator?

I forgot one snag - the OS door opener thing that stops the door from opening too wide has broken at one fixing point - I'm guessing that my only chance here is from a donor car?

Hi Lee

Front and rear door check latches are a different shape so you need to get and fit the correct one.
Front ones have a curved latch bar and rear ones a straight bar.

Thanks John,

I'll be careful - if anyone on here has one spare, I would be very grateful - it's OS front door check latch.

If it needs spheres the centre one are primarily responsible for the soft ride so change those first.

Where are you located?

A number of members have stocks of spares, so door locks and check straps shouldn't be a problem. In addition, some have such things as sphere testers.

Hi folks,

Thanks again.

I'm East Midlands, Leicestershire. Mark Lightfoot's garage is about 40 minutes away, and I've never used him but he's on the recommended list of independent specialists.

I'm thinking it might be worth him servicing the suspension and telling me what he finds, then I could take it from there.

If anyone's nearby or could post the door strap, I would happily pay the necessary with gratitude.

Thanks,
Lee

Hi All,

Update on my recently acquired vehicle.

Car serviced. Timing belt and water pump changed by previous owner, so oil and all relevant filters changed, brakes and tyres are fine for now, front windscreen washer jets cleared out and now working, dipstick replaced, underside in good condition (surface rust under both front sills near to where car was jacked in error?), autobox oil changed.

Central locking now working. The problem the previous owner experienced, resulting in him taking out the fuse was the door lock button (on the top of the vertical rod) was catching on the door plastic. Moving it up a notch made it all work. I had a temporary problem with the door solenoid not operating, but it started to work without any intervention. I'll expect the problem to reoccur in the future.

Spheres & LHM changed, damaged droplink replaced. The ride is now much smoother. It isn't a fast car, but then I didn't expect that.

Generally, I'm really short of time at the moment so I've had to use garages for this work, and whilst that hasn't been a cheap option and I need time to recover, the car is in a good state now mechanically and I'm starting to trust it. NS front window still not working, dash board bulbs need replacing and LH side display shows nothing at all. I've never removed a dashboard but I have the instructions showing the screw locations. That's the next job.

Cosmetically, not so good, but that can wait. I'll need to find a trustworthy bodyshop and/or locate replacement doors/wing on the O/S. This is where is was accident damaged and resprayed badly. I'm still trying to locate the paint code - I've looked around the air filter area but can't see any writing.

The armrest hinge is broken, so I'll post another request in the sales and wants section.

I also cannot see any writing regarding the RP number on the A pillar. Can I get the RP number another way, then it can be added to the car database on this forum?

Also, I'm glad this forum is here. I've found lots to read in the archives, and thanks for the replies to my questions.

Thanks,
Lee
