non-mechanic new owner

Post by trampsterdave » Sat Apr 28, 2018 11:01 pm

Hi all
I have just purchased an XM here in NZ...bought from Nathan who was a also a member on this form and history of car as below:
If it is my old one it's a 1994 (produced 1993) Mk1.5. It should have a Mk1 bumper and nose cone however when I got it had the S2 nose cone. I believe it has had a new bumper and panel work since I sold it but it does still look like a S1 bumper. The colour is Sable Metallic (code ECZ I believe) - only used for one year and a rather rare colour.

It was originally a Telecom NZ company car and went private after that. I purchased it April 2012 and sold it around August 2015. When I purchased it the exterior was in rather poor condition (and unfortunately stayed that way during my ownership) however it was well serviced by a Citroen specialist here in Wellington. I sold it to a man in Levin who had owned several XMs was prepared to spend some money on panel work. He also put a set of 24v wheel on (it originally had steel wheels and the owner previous to me put S1 alloys on it).
Nathan lavished much care and attention on the car...and I plan to do the same...the exterior is now in excellent condition and interior similarly so,,,I have previously owned as DS and a CX [burnt orange] many years ago,. My first searched here will be re plips and digital readout not displaying figures [fuel consumption temp etc]...I suspect something to do with the a new bonnet and possible battery disconnection.
This forum site looks amazing -some passionate owners! Thanks,
Dave

After a battery disconnect, RH display will just show a series of dashes instead of figures.
If you use the two small setting buttons on the display (top one Hours, bottom one Minutes) to set the clock, the other figures should be available. Car will have to cover a little distance before fuel figures become active.

The car sounds as if you've given it some first-rate attention. Look forward to some photos, when our upload facility is working again!

Hiya Dave. Good to here from you. There can't be many XMs in NZ. Were there ever many French cars out there? Your CX sounds like it was interesting. What happened to that?

I've never been to NZ. What's the driving like out there? Do you get much snow? (Sorry if that's a stupid question!) I'm wondering if there is much salt on the roads out there and how well cars survive.

It would be good to see some pics of the car with some spectacular NZ back grounds!

Good luck, LG.

The plip issues is probably either a failed plip or receiver.
that sounds like telling you how to suck eggs, but to check the plip fire the infra-red LED at a digital camera and see if it sees it.
If the plip works reliably, the receiver is likely to be duff.

For the display, they do bleed the LCD liquid and also delaminate, both should be obvious. As well as the aforementioned setting of the clock, if the backlights are blown you just cannot see these displays are working. It may just needs new bulbs.

thanks folks...haven't tried to reset clock yet [its working but readouts not]-and I'm told the keys are after-market but will try new batteries and see what happens...I've just driven some 1100 kms [about 400 to go] and the car has been wonderful [is that tempting fate?] apart from the fact that I'm too scared to lock it in case I cant get in! I have taken one photo by the sea -and will figure out how to post it -if that's currently possible.
In answer to query-there are quite a few older citroens around in NZ -maybe BX's mainly but also some wonderful DS and some CX's..not many xms -though another in Dunedin I am looking forward to seeing...will also have to check re antifreeze as it does get pretty cold down south -snow a few times each year but usually not for long.
cheers, Dave

remotes now work fine -new batteries-and even better -the right side digital readout is working -ironically when I was showing it to the mechanic as something to look at when service is due. [but not outside temp]. Will load photos -but cant see how.. [is there any way other than using external site to load?] I love driving the xm...prefer to both ds and cx Ive had previoulsy -though a long time ago.
Cheers, Dave

Ciaran who runs the site will do the change as soon as he has the spare time.

Photobucket won't allow posting of photos/allbums on to third party sites (eg Forums), unless you pay handsomely.
If you do succeed with a few initial posted links, they'll soon get blocked.

Image upload direct to our Forum is possible at the moment (and will be tweaked soon).
This is how to do it...

- Start to compose your post (in the usual Quick Reply or New Post box)
- Click on Full Editor
- Click on the Upload Attachment tab
- Click on Choose File
- Select your chosen photo or diagram (which should be a .jpg), and Open it
Name of the file will appear in the FIlename box.
- Click on Add the file
File name will appear, and above it you can add any text caption you would like to appear underneath it.
- Place your cursor in the post where you want the photo to appear
- Click Place inline
and the filename will appear in your post inside [attachment] brackets
If you want to see what the posted photo/diag looks like, click Preview, and carry on composing your post, or adding more photos in the same way.

Max. number of photos allowed per post is five.
If you are told that submitted file size (photo) is too large, then reduce the size of the photo in something like Paint or Picasa.

It sounds a bit complicated, but is actually very straightforward. All phpBB forums work similarly.
Advantage for us is that posted photos, diagrams and scans remain on our server for future viewing, and don't depend on some external commercial site for being available.

Hope helpful.
