Driving To Biarritz

Post by markysimon » Mon Jun 11, 2018 9:52 pm

Don't know if anyone's done such a thing, but I have to drive from le Harvre to Biarritz next week and am wondering if there's a scenic route that avoid some of the tolls. I've got two days for the journey so could take in some sights... :)
Why don't we do it in the road?

I'm driving down to andelucia in Spain later on this year and not using the motorway but using the national roads to save the cost of the tolls, simply turn of the motorway options in the satnave.

Good advice from Norman. Have done the same with Garmin: just opt for non-toll route. Worth doing this in advance of driving it, to make sure satnav doesn't route you through hours of ('shortest distance') D-roads! Adds time to the journey, but a much better way to enjoy France.

Last September, the auto-route/toll bill across France (San Sebastien to Caen) was somewhere between €50 and €100.

Not done it for a long time, but it's quite possible. You certainly will meander through some lovely towns and countryside. The air temperature will quickly increase once you clear the first 100 miles of France.
First time we went round France we just stopped wherever we felt like on any given day...Biarritz was one of the locations.

Covered most of the ground you'll be driving three times since last Otober....most recently returned last Thursday....(Calais to Irun...en route to Algarve and back.) Wasn't hanging about to admire scenery but did avoid most of the tolls and could have avoided more. If memory serves the top part is D910 and then N10 rejoining main motorway route just north of Bordeaux.
If you'd like more details I can dig them out.....
Regards, Rodders.
