Thank you so much for your further words of wisdom Dean and including in relation to the governor. The box will certainly be going back for further investigation and repairs although I may initially ask permission from the garage to check the governor seals as the task is so simple. In relation to bench testing it does appear to be possible and I found this firm not a million miles away from me: http://auto-transmissions.co.uk/automat ... n-testing/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; As you say there are two pressure line test ports on the gearbox. There will no doubt have to be some further replacement parts and I understand the pump installed was s/h. With regards, Matthew T.

The transmission oil pump is a simple gear pump, so there is not much that can go wrong with it, other than wear and damage from debris, neither of which is likely to result in such dramatic symptoms.

Have you seen this document: https://cardiagn.com/saab-4-hp-18-4-spe ... on-online/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ? It may give you some insight into the symptoms.

Do the symptoms on page 27 seem to match?

Worth a check, so the metal sealing ring on the end of the governor opens up it's groove so perfectly it looks like nothings wrong but leaks like a seive, worth a check after all.

Many thanks for the further advice chaps and just confirm that I did in the end pull the governor, although initially it did not seem worth bothering due to the extent of the forward clutch slip going on! The gearbox did not have sufficient traction to drive up my ramps. I can confirm the rubber and metal sealing rings were intact and there certainly was not a 0.04'' (1.02mm) gap around the metal ring or wear on the stator bushing. I also dropped out the oil once again that was quite heavily discolored and slightly burnt smelling. With regards, Matthew T.

I had one final drive in the car, on level ground, mainly to check the suspension that is now working a treat after re-setting the front height and I also did a photo-shoot. Hopefully it will be agreed from the appearance that this XM is worth saving and my further perseverance to resolve the gearbox fault! Regards, Matthew T.

I have a further update in that the engine and gearbox have now been removed (again!) and I plan to speak with the garage and hopefully drop off the box later this week. As with the last extraction on my 1990 auto I did not completely remove the front end to save time and work. The second removal all went fairly smoothly with the job undertaken on two sessions Friday pm and Saturday pm/eve. On another positive note, given the opportunity of access a few additional issues are being addressed, which include most significantly and annoyingly an occasional grinding noise on hot starting that turned out to be damaged ring gear! As it happens very fortunately I had a spare good starter ring that is now fitted with a replacement motor, although I am unsure how the problem arose other than overuse! I have also changed the lower engine mount and both drive shaft inner cv joints were throwing out grease due to poorly fitted clips and are hopefully now sorted. Regards, Matthew T.
