Re: Hiya - a new guy here
Are there some friendly French or other non-UK forums around that I can pick their brains from?
As stated before, mine is super rare carb model XU10, so there resources here is a bit limited in that aspect.
I ask this because there was a bit of drama with starting this morning (not too cold by UK standard, probably 10°C).
Basically if I don't warm up (by just letting it idle) for say around 2-3 minutes, the engine dies and it won't start again for another 5-10 minutes.
I drove uphill for around 100m then it died and wouldn't start so had to roll back down to a spot I could safely park.
I think it might be the choke - the previous owner told me he put a BX choke - it's supposedly similar but I don't think it's quite working right.
Cheers

Re: Hiya - a new guy here
You may struggle to find English-language expertise on these carburettors. I am not certain of which carburettor you have, but if it is a Solex 34-34 Z1 (or similar) then this document (in French) seems to be the bible: http://xrms.free.fr/divers/405/tout_sav ... _rev_B.pdf
You could try asking for help on the BX forum https://bxclub.co.uk/ , but I don't think that there are currently any carburettor experts there. You could also try on FCF https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ , but again, people with experience of working with carburettors are becoming rare.

Re: Hiya - a new guy here
Looking at ServiceBox parts for the car, under VIN number...
Carburettor is listed as
"1998L and monopoint inj and (XT) export" "SOLEX16008PSA475"
. . . .
.
Have had no joy with googling that carb number, except to find some sensors for it.
Haynes BX book (#908) doesn't list it, but does go into decent detail on lots of others.
Haynes do a Carburettor Workshop Manual (#4177) which includes Solex, but not that one.
Some parts for the unit here:

Re: Hiya - a new guy here
That is interesting. Monopoint injection is a completely different beast than a conventional carburettor. Maybe this car has been converted back to a carburettor? We really need the ID of what is actually fitted to the car.

Hi Mike,
Yes, confusing. Cit Parts refer to carburettor-monopoint inj as one item. I guess it is, in the sense that the mixture has only one hole to go down!
. .
The parts info above was derived from Sam's VIN no., and the Characteristics you can see in a post on p.1 of this thread (a PDF).
Have asked Sam to look to see whether what's on the car is the same as the parts diag above.

Re: Hiya - a new guy here
There were XMs sold in Europe with a conventional carburettor (the Solex 34-34-Z1 that I linked earlier), which was also used on the BX and Peugeot 405. I am not aware that the carburettor was an option for the XM in the UK (where this car apparently originated). A monopoint 'carburettor' would not have a choke, so is apparently not what is fitted to the car now. Maybe it has had an engine swap?

Re: Hiya - a new guy here
I'll have a closer look but looks like the car's had some random running repairs over the years so I wouldn't be surprised if things have been swapped etc just to keep it running.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

That sounds like carburettor icing. Ensure the warm air intake snorkle is attached and workging properly.ul9601 wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2019 10:56 pmBasically if I don't warm up (by just letting it idle) for say around 2-3 minutes, the engine dies and it won't start again for another 5-10 minutes.

Those Solex carbs are a bit fickle, see if you can source a suitable Webber twin choke to replace it with.

Re: Hiya - a new guy here
Ok so I took the air cleaner thingy off and had a quick look.
As Dieselman said, the warm air intake wasn't really going anywhere - only a foot long of the flexible metal duct was attached to the exhaust manifold heat shield. Also, one of the four carb-to-manifold attachment bolt was 3/4 way out... And maybe a few vacuum hoses missing and a connector unplugged but not sure where from. I'll need to get the warm air ducting sorted first and see if that makes it better.
