End of the Long Sleep

Post by xmexclusive » Sat Jul 27, 2019 5:47 pm

Started the process to return an early (1994) 2.5 Exclusive to the road.
BOK has been dry stored for about 12 years.
Originally there was a stalling problem that a Citroen dealer found difficult to pin down.
A rather expensive new injector pump without certainty of success was the diagnoses.
So they offered a top end C5 at a reduced price.
BOK was well loved so put in the garage for repair later while the C5 lived on the drive.

Time has come to try to sort the problem and see what else happens from long term storage.

The initial assessment required a bit of air in the tyres, spare battery and some minor work on fuel supply.
Under the bonnet there was clear evidence that the car had been seen to by an XM specialist.
Quite a bit to sort and also things to return to original.

Once running it was clear that the suspension understood what was required of it and tried hard but fell a bit short.
The rust hunt then started with the strut heads.
Plenty of peeled rubber on the tops but only surface rust on the cone and no splits in the main rubber.
Spares to find to send to KINGas for rebuilding but not a critical job for the present.
The dropped gaiter was put back in place and the heads treated with rust converter.
Rule of thumb guide: If you cannot get the gaiter to stay in place the strut head has a serious problem and the bonnet is at risk.

Then the underside of the car was examined and condition recorded.
The mud flaps were removed for binning and the trapped mud shovelled out.
All seemed well with the body structure with most underseal still sounds.
The lifting points were straightened then all the reachable surface rust treated.
While the sills were sound there was paint spalling and surface rusting just below the front passenger door.
This was cleaned and protected.

Spare wheel carrier needed new hanger bolt and a usable wheel/tyre fitted.
Condition of the carrier left much to be desired but can wait till later as the wheel is held firm now.

So a couple of days ago BOK went for MOT.

Aha...nice suspension, there John. ;)

Sounds like a great project.

I suspect the dealer is incorrect with their original diagnosis as the Bosch Vp36 pump is pretty robust and reliable, being a mechanical pump with electrical control, as opposed to a fully electonic pump.
If power is lost to the pump, even with the STOP solenoid activated, the metering valve will return to STOP and shut the engine off.

iirc, the only feedback from the pump is the speed sensor and fuel delivery position sensors, both which should give fault codes.

I suspect you have other pumps to use, but before that, check all electrical connections and read any codes.

The above normally appears to be the case. I've seen all sorts, broken pipe brackets, mutillated wiring, bolts missing, aftermarket/cheap parts.
XM are reliable cars when serviced properly and run on Citroen parts.

p.s. I bet it passed it's MOT.

I have a refurbished pump and will probably do a swap when the new belts are fitted as the extra work is minimal.
Need to do that before BOK is used in anger as the belts have been on and static for periods that are just too long to risk.
Soot clearing by revving ready for the MOT caused me much trepidation.
Originally I booked an off the record check of MOT items without the emission check revving.
Changed to a full MOT at the last minute.
Ideally I would like to be sure of the problem, not just swap the pump.
Citroen garage report shows no fault codes present despite the stalling problem.
I have to find which box where the Lexia got stored in.

All sensors and actuators are monitored on that Bosch EDC (Electronic Diesel Control). They record everything, so any issue should flag a fault code.

If there are no faults at all, suspect the power to the ECU going down.

That is the same EDC used by Mercedes C and E ranges and VAG V6-2.5 litre cars, so is well known.

Hi Peter. I didn't realise John had a c5.. I didn't take that in..

As for me Peter as my signature I've a mk. 1r 2007 (sometimes also referred to as mk. 2). 2.2 16v hdi 173bhp. Manual 6 speed but all loaded with everything except zenon lamps. I have heated leather to go in. As for the engine. When it works its increadable. It is happy to sit at 1100rpm in 5th at 50. Pull from that. Shows 80mph at 2000rpn in 6th. Never needs to be taken over 3000rpm as there's so much pull under that..
As for economy. She averages 40mpg. But I have an ongoing issue of power loss and limp mode but it resets after key off and restart. Also a hesitation at 2k and 3k rpm but I beleve that's egr valve just like the v6 hdi engines on the c6.
As for the car. Its my second mk. 1r the first being 1.6 16v hdi which was perfectly fine for me too. But it's my 4th c5 of two mk. 1 2.0 hdi 8v I've had.

My next... A volvo v70 d5 estate please..

Hi Paul

I had a couple of Mk1's a 2.2 hdi which had an excellent ride but dreadful fuel consumption, which I then changed for a 2.0. which had excellent fuel consumption but a dreadful ride, I also had a lot of problems with it so I abandoned them for 406 estates which have been wonderful for the last 10 years. probably the most reliable cars I have ever had.

I never thought of going back to the C5 until I drove one earlier this year, it was a steel sprung '08 X7 but the ride is superb compared with anything else on the road, except perhaps the hydropnumatic version. The wife has one as well now and loves driving it but they are already proving themselves less reliable that the 406, so I am wondering if I did the right thing. The fuel consumption is brilliant though, with 70 mpg available on the motorway, that's the 2.0. Hdi - but you know how I drive.

John did briefly mention having a C5 although I don know what model - unless I got it wrong. I dare say we will find out shortly.

Peter don't mix up the early 2.2 hdi 136bhp with the 2.2 hdi 173bhp engines. They are very different...

X7 for me is a disaster.. Steering rack failures.. 1k plus.. Wiper motor failiues strangely there's two motors.. Window regulators 300 quid. Heater control panels.. Lack of room.. Very cramped for the external size.. Way more room in mk. 1s. I'd sooner fight with front calipers and cables and rear calipers which are much cheaper..

After these mk. 1r c5s I've no idea..

AFAIK, John doesn't have a C5. The Xm 2.5 that he has acquired was taken off the road and it's replacement was a C5.
