Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
Here is a close up photo of the headlight. I'm not sure if these are the original XM lights, or the USA replacement.
I cleaned up all the grounds and am replacing the battery negative terminal, will then get to testing the relays etc. as recommended.
Thank you!
Mike

That is not an XM headlight, see the filler panel at the inner end.

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
Just possible that is a Xantia headlight.
If replacing with pukka XM items, if you by chance find RHD ones with internal plastic fresnel lenses, these can be easily converted to LHD by simply flipping/reversing the fresnels between left and right sides. Later LHD headlights do not have the fresnels, although the RHD ones do. Bulbs for all of them are H1 60/55W halogen.

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
They are not Xantia lights, they must be from a vehicle that was approved in the USA.

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
I vaguely recall that the U.S. regulations that made life difficult for non-round headlights, H1, H4 etc got relaxed as time went by, so possible that original (European) XM headlights could well be acceptable now. Or not, as the case may be.
Did muse that those headlights could be "Chinese XM", where the Xantia was briefly sold badged 'XM' as part of a CKD-wangle.
Idle thoughts, amid a few 000 pages of PSA circuitry

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
I believe the headlights used are from Pontiac Grand Prix.
They had to be USA sourced to be DOT approved.

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
I dont know what vehicle these lights came from, but in this day and age I could literally put flashlights (torches) in there and nobody would really care. We dont have vehicle inspection in Oregon, except for emissions. I'll probably leave as is for now, part of an interesting story. Thanks for the info!

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
Wow, that fuel filter. I ended up pulling the rear portion of the exhaust and the spare tire carrier to access the fuel filter. It is a purflux which indicates to me that it is the original fuel filter as that brand is not sold in the USA. At this point, it would seem advisable to change out the green spheres "while I'm in there." Any tips on a complete kit for this XM? It appears to have 7 spheres.
I want to rule out all the "normal stuff" before fault tracing the start problem. I drained about 12 gallons of stale gasoline out of the tank, smelled like varnish. The car last ran 7 years ago.
I would like to replace the distributor cap and rotor as they are both corroded, but I may need to settle for just cleaning them as the distributor cap does not appear to be easy to find.
Lastly, the spark plugs installed are Bosch FR6LDC. Does that sound correct?
Thank you for your thoughts! Sorry for the scattered presentation here...
Mike
Edit: found the cap, rotor, plugs, and fuel filter for sale online through Amazon of all places.

Re: New XM owner in Oregon USA
Mike, you might find this Citroen publication useful for spec and repair of a lot of parts...
When ordering spheres, 400/70/1.3 for example means 400cc/70bar/1.3mm. The last figure is the diameter of the tiny damping orifice, and important that it is correct.
For the main Accumulator sphere (400/62/--), -- signifies no damping, just a large hole. -- also applies to centre (Hydractive) spheres, and the SC/MAC anti-sink one (fitted to later cars).
Have also looked up the ex-factory spec for the car (on service.citroen), and just noticed it has Diravi steering...
