When this second box "Stops" we have decided the car will get a full conversion, to a 2.0 hdi 8v 110 with autobox that we know as we used it in a C5 for 12 months..
That would be an interesting conversion.
Does the Hdi ECU and gearbox ECU use CAN bus, if so, what would need to be transferred with it to make it run?
Would it need the body control module, ignition switch and ABS, or can it function with it's own CAN and the appropriate 120 ohm terminators.

I needed to keep all the engine harness, of which theres little as its multiplexed, harness to the BSM in the car which incorporates the immobiliser, and some of the harness to the steering colum for the wiring for the transponder pickup ring. Theres no kick down cable on the AL4, but instead CAN buss comms cables between the gearbox ecu and engine ecu. Most of the harness is engine and engine bay located, with as stated a small amount to the BSM and of course power to the lift pump that would need installing in the fuel tank. Im fairly confident that the small amount of extra cableing would fit along side exsisting xm harnesses.. As long as I get the transponder circuitry all connected so it unlocks the engine ecu the rest should be fine

The transponder pickup is a simple clip on thing.. No ignition switch needs changing..

I completely forgot about this..
So. I stripped her down and got the box and lump out.. I'm sure we all know how to do this but by now lol

Bear in mind this is 2019.. I'm still fit.. Well and strong still.. Completely un aware of what's ahead of me towards the end of 2020.

Getting inspection approval
FB_IMG_1621153278214.jpg
FB_IMG_1621153286577.jpg
Finding small issues along the way.. A very corroded air con pipe.. Replaced when re fitting..
FB_IMG_1621153363167.jpg
And nicely accessible.

A few corrosion issues found on electrics too..
FB_IMG_1621153295442.jpg
FB_IMG_1621153371871.jpg
Fairly bad on the fuse box.. Caught in time comes to mind.
FB_IMG_1621153383502.jpg
Fairly good here too..

So pressed on got exhaust undone.. Shafts out. Water out.. And lift out..
FB_IMG_1621153390145.jpg
Gives the chance to look around the engine bay.. However closer inspection of the rack shows a completely missing Bush on the ram..
FB_IMG_1621153491881.jpg
So. It was also rack out and swap for another.. Which was worth it as the fitted rack had torn boots too. A job made Easyer having the engine out.

I've got pics of the rack work but I've a number of pics missing.. I thought they were on my cloud but aren't. So either on a laptop hard drive or sadly lost.

Another job I did. The bottom rad hose to back of the block the metal interconnection pipe that sits on the subframe was very rusty. So while access was easy with the engine out I got the pipe of wire brushed it all down and applied underseal coat to it.. Another saved item as it currently Chad no leaks.
Again. Missing pictures which when I locate will add.

So.. Dropped box off but found a small issue..
FB_IMG_1621153404398.jpg
FB_IMG_1621153410936.jpg
So to be safe. Managed to aquire a replacement.. Unfortunally the box I got was without torque converter.. So had to use the same one unfortunally. So test of time.
FB_IMG_1621153463423.jpg
That's where the collar went..

So. Swapped boxes. Reassembled.. And fitted to the car. This ran into early to mid 2020. When first kickdown was instigated..

But we got the box engine shafts.. Exhaust front end all on. While I was there I also completely rewired and reset the set of relays on the passenger side for cooling fans. There was a couple of corroded pins and connections needing addressing so we did that too.

I was also very pleased with the replacement box oil condition. It was still a nice light colour and nothing like black so it gave me good feeling.

So. All installed and bavk on its wheels I was very keen to see box operation. Upon priming and starting I was pleased to feel the box took up instant gear engage.. Both forward and reverse. We there then had the changing in life.

Fast forward a good 10 months. I had some small jobs to do. Fit a blower motor.. Some tidying up. Check gearbox oil level. Water low was flashing but I remembered it was needing anti freeze..

So addresed those. The blower ended up being an xm blower with a xantia transistor board as it was the only one that worked out of 5 I had..

So blower installed.. Gearbox topped up as the level was at the bottom of the stick. There was some new Dex2 in the boot. Put some of the interior back together.. And I'm pleased to report the car is now just about ready for an mot and it's first run out..

Further update. I managed to quickly zip the car down the road. The box appears to operate OK. But didn't get out of 2nd lol..
The short run though did reveal hard front spheres. I've a pair of front C5 spheres I'm gonna put on and see how soft it will be. The spheres have been off a car for a few years so any excess lds should be drain out.

Other then that and bulb check etc I beleve the car to be mot ready.

I just need to sell the bloody C5 hdi estate 2004 now so I can swap insurance over onto it and get it on the road..

C5 spheres will be firmer than Xm spheres, due to smaller volume, but won't be firmer than flat spheres.

My understanding is that Lds is just synthetic Lhm+ and there aren't any compatability issues either way.
