Yes I could try trimming off the chewed up bits and see how they clean up.

Any inserts would be better than none at all!

In the engine bay photo above, at the top RH corner, behind the strut top, there are 2 yellow wires. Are these connected to an inertia switch? I can't think what else they would be I thought that inertia switches were compulsory from the 1970s on fuel injected engines.

Those yellow wires are part of a bigger loom which is for the hydractive system, the two yellow wires are +\- to the hydractive valve, there is no fuel isolation at all on any mk1 petrol xm.

If an inlet manifold is needed for this I am sure I have one in the shed.

Thanks Dean that's very kind of you but fortunately the manifold has already been replaced. The damaged one and a second spare are in the boot

The side inserts were/are being reproduced in stainless steel so the could be a solution there. If you need a replacement front bumper try to get one with the insert in place. They are not metal but several layers of 'plastics' to create the effect. They are also difficult to find and expensive to buy if you do.

The stainless steel insert sets are restricted to the eight straight car side sections (4 doors strips and 4 short wing pieces).
The front and rear bumper strips have never been available except from Citroen.
These are slightly deeper plastic sections all with bends so these are very difficult to get a perfect match with the stainless side pieces.
Front bumpers come in three different types (Mk1, Mk2 plain and Mk2 with lamp washers).
Rears in car and estate.
No one has cracked a proper full refurb of these "chrome" strips.
Rub down and professional repaint seems to be the current best option.

Thanks for all the info on trims, I'll see what I can find. Are the S1 and S2 front and rear bumper inserts all the same for the hatchback then? The front bumper is with the car but it has got a few battle scars.

Hoping to collect this week and will try spinning the pump with a drill to make loading easier. Fingers crossed there are no leaky pipes!

Mk 2 front trim inserts are 3 piece for the cars with headlamp washers so unique to those cars.
Long time since I have dealt with Mk 1's but I remember difficulty with putting Mk 1 one piece front trims in Mk 2 SX front bumpers.
Trims were same lengths but slot holes for back of trim projections did not match when I tried swapping them.
Cannot remember trying to swap rear bumper trims.

The rear bumper trims are the same, fronts are different due to the S2 bumper being longer along the sides.
