Add a squeeze bulb and a bit of clear hose in the fuel line well before the filter.
Clear hose just before the squeeze bulb.
Get the flow direction arrow on the squeeze bulb the correct way round as it has an extra one way valve in it.
Use this bulb to pump up fuel.
If you can see air in the clear pipe as the fuel being pumped up then there is a small split in the rubber supply hose down the back of the engine.
The rubber hose usually cracks from age/vibration just above the clamp where the steel supply pipe ends.
If there is no air in the fuel then keep squeezing the bulb, fuel should visibly bubble out at any point where the air is normally leaking in.
Recently found a couple of leaky rubber membranes in fuel filter heads that way.

The first two culprits for air in fuel are the primer head itself and also the fuel heater on the side of the cylinder head..

Remove the fuel heater from fuel line.. And try again.. I'll. Get a picture of the area its in so you know where I'm talking about.
Success ! Removed the fuel line from the fuel heater and it runs and drives perfectly. Have given it a few days to double check and it's been perfect. Still takes a few turns before it fires but I suspect there is still air in the system moving about / the fuel is draining back but it doesn't stall which is the main thing. One task at a time. THANK YOU xmexclusive for the brilliant advice very much appreciated. Cheers Paul

Cool.. It is useually the issue. Early xud 2.1 engines very simple in setup and system untill the arrival of the epic lucas system.. Which started introducing an ecu and sensors etc.

Although the 2. 5 td was first with semi electronic but was more reliable bosch fuel system.
