XM milestones, first and last

Post by White Exec » Thu May 07, 2020 5:02 pm

The small flurry of very late (year 2000) cars has been interesting, and got me wondering when the last XM actually left the factory. This led to thinking about RP numbers, and whether we could put together a timeline for major XM production events.

I expect John and others could fill in the blanks on this, and maybe add some more (such as new engines). . .

- RPO/date of first production S1 saloon
:?: One old one: 4572 / 16 May 1989 (MTXM's V6)*

- date of Press launch of the cars
Official launch date France May 23rd 1989 (source XM 0 No.1)
Official launch date UK October 28th 1989 (source XM 0 No.4)

- RPO/date of first S1 estate
New Vehicle Document dated 28th February 1992 (source XM 0 No. 14)

- RPO/date of start of Hydractive II
5929 / 1 Feb 1993

- RPO/date of first S2
:?: June 1994, or 6383 2 May 1994 ?

- RPO/date of last XM off production line
:?: One late one: 8604 / 30 May 2000 (V6 hatch, owner not known, car on our list)*

Total XM production for the 11-year run is stated as 333,775 (Wikipedia) and 333,405 (table below).
For the year MY 2000, the table lists 714 petrol cars, and 1632 diesels, 2346 in total.

I don't think we will be seeing one earlier than MTXM's V6, at 4572...16th May 89.

There may be ones built in the weeks previous to this, but not many, given launch was 23rd May.
Rhd weren't launched until November 89.

All the ones we know about are in the register.

Over on fb CCC pages Shaun Lilly has or had an X plate V6 apparently the last V6 or one of the very last..

So that will have a higher rp number then the current W plate one we have listed..

There's still a good few out there which are not on our register list .

After a quick chat with Shaun it seems that W Pvc on the register could well be one of the last at 8604.. His X plater car was a 1999 car and has a lower Rp..

Am adding these first/last 'contestants' to the list above as they appear.
And any other milestones too.

Thanks for posting the spreadsheet Chris. I can see that mine is one of 342 auto petrol V6s made in 2000.

Can you explain the extra 24v (2963cc), produced between 1993 and 1997? Interesting to note that the last of the original 2975cc 24v motors was built in 1996!

Cheers

Alec

Lance Cole (Citroen: The Complete Story) says XM was withdrawn from sales July 2000, but that is a woolly date, and might just signify no more sales literature, listings or promotion (some hopes!). Dealers would have had a (very) few still left, I guess.
1 July 2000 = RPO 8636, but the last cars would have been made before that.

As we've posted before, sales were so slow, some cars hung around between leaving factory and getting sold (registered) for a very long time. Our 2.5 sat for 30 months before first registration, and that by a dealer.

The 24v from smaller sales was probably never altered.. but the 12v engine received revisions around 1994.. these engines are noticed by the reposition of the oil dipstick from the over the altinator position to middle of the engine directly Infront ... And a different dipstick in black..

Actually 1997 for the XM - see Chris's spreadsheet (confirmed by Wikipedia).

Wikipedia also confirms what I noticed in the spreadsheet - both the 12 & 24v PRV engines were reduced from 2975 to 2963cc in 1993 (at least I am assuming they must be the PRV engines, as I've only ever heard of the PRV and ES9J4 V6s).
