Diesel Specialist in Kent

Post by jamescarruthers » Wed Jul 15, 2020 10:07 am

There is a guy over on BX Club who is having a terrible time setting up his overhauled Bosch pump on his 1.9 N/A diesel engine.

He needs an old school diesel specialist garage to set up the timing and anti-stall and may have fuel delivery problems too.

He has reached the end of the road with what he can do at home. Can anyone recommend a garage in Kent for him, please?

Is the car driveable?
Could he get it to Dunsfold (Horsham-Guildford area)?

Yes, he has it driveable on either max advance or max retard, I can't remember which. Do you know a place at Dunsfold? I'll pass it on, it's not crazy far.

SGG Dunsfold (was Shalford Green Garage, before they moved).
They have a website. Ring and ask for Tom. He knows these engines inside out.
SGG are on the Dunsfold Aerodrome business park, a stonesthrow from the Top Gear track. Off the A281 between Horsham & Guildford.

Any diesel centre will be able to do this job, it's. Basic stuff.
Pick the nearest as driving it with over advanced timing could destroy a piston.

First, I would ensure the fuel supply is sound, by using a clear pipe and looking for bubbles.
Air in the fuel will cause retarded timing and incomplete injection.

Is the pump definitely a Bosch VE. I thought all Bx used Lucas CAV pumps.

For the pump to have to be set at one end or the other sounds like the timing belt isn't on correctly timed.

Appreciate the risk of driving it.
Could be either a Lucas/CAV RotoDiesel or Bosch pump.
Haynes book #1379 Citroen Diesel Engine (covers 1.7 & 1.9 NA & turbo) contains the info needed to set both pumps.

Or break the crankshaft, as has happened to me several times with Perkins engines.

Thanks everyone, I passed this informmation on. I think he has found a fuel pipe leak, ingesting air, and also roughly got it timed right. Sadly he's now lost interest and is trying to swap it on Autoshite, should anyone be interested. He's done a pheneminaly amount of TLC to the car but I guess enough is enough!
