The time you lose in dealing with the front member fixings, subframe and bumper brackets, you will gain in refitting the engine and associated items.

Yup, don't see the point in doing a half hearted job.

Do it once, do it right

On the presumption that the rear subframe is badly corroded I took this good one I've had for ages to the shotblasters. As per usual they've done a cracking job

So, hiding underneath all that rust was shiny black paint.

The 'shiny black paint' is the hardened, toughened stuff they use not only on steel wheels and motorbike frames but on the industrial stuff they blast and repair.

No need to paint with Hammerite, Raptor or such, just cover with ACF50 and leave.

ACF50 is not the correct product to use on that type (painted) surface.....it does not have the film thickness to resist layers of dust/dirt etc and as that builds up it will migrate into the dryer (dust/dirt) medium. On that type of area/surface you really should be using a wax based product like S50 from Bilt&Hamber or the equivalent from Dinitrol for example.

Sump oil filter and pump good, sump all but dry, and the head looks okay at least visually, but the crank is seized solid.

Which is unusual until I removed the box to find it with a thick coating of oil residue.

Removing the clutch revealed a coating of oil leaving me to think the main bearing seal has gone some time ago. Although the clutch was fitted 12 years ago it's still only 15k miles old which doesn't explain why the thrust bearing is almost toast. For the sake of it I'll remove the box from the other engine to see if all's well there.

Head stripped bare and sent for pressure testing and skimming. When that comes back it's time to put it all back together.

Good to see you are moving on with this.
I suspect the crank has spun a bearing, is the camshaft Ok.

You can buy the clutch release bearing seperately if the rest of the clutch is still serviceable.

Oem valeo clutch kit is P/n 801001
Release bearing P/n 079937
