DVLA check shows it's taxed until Nov 2010
, how did it get through the MOT? I think the DVLA must be wrong, surely.....?

Hi Guys. have read all your comments with great interest. I am a possible buyer for this vehicle and have taken all of your points on board. This would be my first XM so don't really want to get my fingers stung right away. How much cash do you think this vehicle would need to get useable as a day to day run-about. From my inexperienced eye this looks like a good buy. I understand the issues with tyre, turbo, etc but would appreciate some frank advice if this is then right car to start with. The esate version is the one I am looking for. Can anyone give me a rough idea of the kind of money I would need to spend?

Welcome to our web-site. Pleased you are considering an XM as a working car.
Car collectors like this seller tend to be accuracte and reasonably fair with fault descriptions.
Taken at face value £400 is quite probably a very fair price.
No MOT and tax technically makes a problem to drive away but in reality the starting price recognises this.
Mileage if correct is perhaps half total working life to be expected for the car.
Typical weld repairs are £50 (£35 trade) per plate so not a lot of cost there unless the rust is too close to the petrol tank to work without removal.
Turbo problem not my area so cannot cost but many reports on here of cracked manifold problems with 2 ltr petrol turbos so may be that is the cause.
Awkward job to get at so a touch expensive on labour if you cannot do it yourself.
Comments are made simply from the advert description.
There is no substitute for an actual examination of the car including looking underneath on a ramp.
Any car bought blind on ebay carries a risk of undeclared/unknown faults. That risk is clearly with the buyer.
In practice any cheap car (sub £1000) from any source has some of those risks that could cost you.

Great advice. Today I also took the chance to call an independent specialist (based in Edinburgh) to ask advice on the XM. The mention of rust at the wheel arch concerned him (he has not seen the car but just going on ad description) as the sills are potentially a big problem. Any welding on a car is usually a sign of worse things to come. He was not so concerned about the turbo as this seems a common problem however a new exhaust will be expensive. What encouraged me was that he said the XM is a reliable car if you get the right one however could be costly if you make the wrong choice. He stated that a 2.1 series 2 would be the best option to go for. However after searching the web this morning it is very slim pickings. I had set myself an initial budget of £1100....but might need to increase. The fuel consumption on the petrol would not bother me to much as I driving local but he thinks the 2.0T is underpowered for this car? It would be interesting to hear from any owners who have this make and model?? I appreciate all the advice and will lock away in the old grey matter as I continue to search. Much Obliged.

Welcome to the forum.
If you are prepared to spend proper sums of money for a XM. I think the best advice I can offer you is to make sure you are buying the right car for you. There will be more XMs up for sale later on.
As for the Turbo petrol Models, its 150bhp, so plenty of power to shift one of these about. I personally have diesels, as I prefer the economy.
I would encourage you to inspect any car before you buy it. Check the underside of the car very throughly, and look out for where it may rust next. A local XM Estate owner to me had to take his car off the road because the rear subframe was rotten, and where the rear subframe mounted onto the car.
I sold a turbo petrol car to a friend of mine during the summer, and it had a blowing exhaust to block manifold. His mechanic did it with the engine in situ, but it wasn't a cheap repair.
If you buy this car, count on keeping enough money aside from your total spend to get that repaired properly. The description says it has a new exhaust so that is one less thing to worry about. Welding XMs isn't ideal. But if it is only a small amount then it will be ok.
