XM Newbie

Post by EasyRider » Mon Apr 27, 2026 5:51 pm

Greetings.

Just taken the plunge with a 1996 XM Diesel Estate.

Plenty of engineering and spannering experience with other cars but this is first French one.

Appreciate any advice here.

Cheers

Welcome! You've come to the right place - there's more knowledge of XMs here than anywhere else.
Tell us what it is you've got - is it running, roadworthy? Or a project?

Its a 96 2.5 diesel. Around 120k miles.

A few electrical gremlins including rear wash/wiper, rear window operation from front switch, missing exhaust centre box, external trim fit and finish. But overall running well.

In the self help files section, we have a thread called Citroen private cars technical books. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=11023

I would suggest you download the one for 1996 as there is lots of information in it. Engine oil is 8 litres of 10W/40, Gear oil is 2.2 litres of gear oil. The books are successive, so any missing information may have already been in earlier versions, but the 2.5td was first introduced in 1996, so is covered fully in that one.

We also have a complete set of wiring diagrams for Series-2 Xm, re-drawn by member djg (Gabor). Link to latest version viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7592&start=110#p132408

For tailgate related electrical items, the first place to look on an estate is the loom at the hinge, as they twist and break.

There is nothing you cannot fix yourself on an Xm, have fun, let us know how you get on.
