Re: 2 * 2.1 SD
I applaud your attempts to get the car painted. I have done a handful of paint repairs in my lifetime using rattle cans and have a 50% rate of getting a decent result.

Re: 2 * 2.1 SD
Thanks. I need all the encouragement I can get...
Doing things back to front: after I painted the outside of the rear wings, I decided to check the inside of them, especially that the lip was actually painted. To the surprise nobody I saw a couple of rust blisters where the rear edge of the arch liner rubs the paint and the wheel throws dirt/water/slush up.
I wire wheeled the inside of the lip and the blisters and saw.
When wire wheeling the paint I was aware it would heat the metal and new lacquer, so was careful to not make it too hot...but that didn't stop me touching it to see how warm it was and leaving fingerprints in the new lacquer.
When reaching into the right side space was really tight and I also pressed against the perfect lacquer, causing a material imprint.
It's a good job I need to wet sand it.
The left side had some small pits and took quite some effort to remove all the rust, the right side was surface rust only and much easier.
Left side after about an hour of rust removal. I carried on for about another hour, until all the rust was removed, but have no image.
Right side
It's worth checking this area. I'm sure we have all seen Xm with rusty rear aches, especially series-2 Exclusives, due to them having foam sound deadening placed on top of the arch liner: the foam becomes soaked and causes the wings to rust badly.
I then wire wheeled again to peen the surface and applied two coats of primer.

Re: 2 * 2.1 SD
Two coats of primer and one coat of machine enamel (not shown) has now been applied. I expected to be able to second coat the top coat, but the heat was keeping it tacky.
As I couldn't paint that second top coat I went onto stripping the boot linings out.
I was already aware that a couple of the bolts holding the luggage tie down rings had seized in their captive nuts and the only way to remove them was to pull them out of the body, and having lifted the carpet saw some rusty areas.
It appears water has entered the boot, I think from the tailgate seal, which was loose in the top left corner, but it may also be the fir tree clip holding the wheel-arch liner in place has let water in.
This clip goes through the wheel-house from outside, behind the upright strengthening plate and is almost directly below the sunroof drain tube. More sunroof joy...
Alternatively the light seal has been leaking, but so far I think it's the tailgate seal.
Any water that enters the boot sits in the soundproofing felt and liners, so causes corrosion.
The worst area by far is the spare wheel carrier screw support. I think this is from water thrown up by the rear wheels.
So far I've given them a quick wire wheeling.
