Selling an untaxed car?
Hi all
I was wondering if anybody could enlighten me on this triviality -but a first for me-.
I have a Fiat Brava 1.2SX 2001 that has come to my hands for immediate re-sale (I'm now the registered keeper).
I was thinking of insuring it for 1-2 days to pick it up and drive it to the MOT station, then put it up for sale. Then insure it again just for the day I'll have to meet the buyer. Insurance @ £16/day here: http://www.insuredaily.co.uk/index.html
However, apparently, the DVLA or Post Offices won't issue a tax-disk on a temporary insurance.
So car will be MOTd and the buyer can insure it, but I believe he can't legally drive away with no tax-disk, can he? And only the registered keeper -myself- can buy a tax disk.
So, am I obliged to insure the car for longer so I can buy tax on it so that buyer can drive away? I see often on ebay "will put tax if buyer wants", but as far as my insurer told me, they'll charge £80 for cancelling an insurance contract. So does everybody just accept they'll lose their £80 or am I missing smthing?
Thanks!
George

Re: Selling an untaxed car?
get it trailered
I have used http://www.shiply.com for such things - a typical qu0te was £125 Newcastle-Gloucester for a Fiat Multipla.
Some less with-it post offices will insure on a day insurance certificate.
dayinsure is via norwich union and temp cover via royal sun alliance
try it and see.

Hi George,
Some people just let the end buyer sort themselves out with tax, and they take the car away at their own risk, or come back for it when it is taxed. You sell the car how it is, with no tax.
Can you guys not tax a car online now? We can't yet.

Re: Selling an untaxed car?
The Police arent interested in the owner, if the DRIVER is caught with the car untaxed, HE is the one to get the fine and the car taken off him because as far as they are concerned HE is responsible to make sure everything is legal..
Watch things like Motorway Cops, or Traffic Cops, you soon learn a lot from them.
The regestered keep will possible just get a call to say "We found your car, if its been taken or not"

Actually, no tax is just a £60 fine, no penatly points. No Insurance is the big one.

Re: Selling an untaxed car?
Hi all, there is NO question that the driver is reponsible, and the car MUST be road legal to be used or kept on a public road,NO ifs ,buts or maybes. This applies even to foreign useage where the vehicle MUST be road legal in country of registration,as some of my colleagues found out whilst in Toulouse having there driving licence held and the vehicle impounded until they could satisfy the French police. This meant the annual trip back to the UK for MOT's in order to be able to tax the vehicle. Most of us had 2 insurance policies,a standard UK one, and another through a company called ITALSURE which arranged insurance for UK registered vehicles for use in Europe for 12 month periods.Very few exported their vehicles from the UK.Even the German contingent didn't bother to import to France due the difficulty in obtaining the manufacturers certificate of conformity. It seems the variation in the legal rules of construction differ slightly in each country, and even the same model (even a French built car as the xm) is prone with difficulties. Crossing the Spanish border Brit registered vehicles were prime targets and especially exiting Andorra. It is also a legal requirement in Europe to carry proof of residence (i kept a utility bill along with the vehicle documents).I can confirm the first check at the border crossings is the Tax disc, followed by a walk around ,tyres, beam deflectors,i had to open the bonnet to show LHD lights were fitted on at least one occaision.

Re: Selling an untaxed car?
Technically you can't keep a car on the road untaxed and if found you may lose the car, but just driving a car home after purchase isn't normally an issue as long as it's MOT'd and most importantly, insured.
If caught driving a car bought that day with no tax you will be reported to the DVLA and possibly face a fine and will have to buy tax covering the day.
I drove my car home 180 miles on a number of motorways and A roads without worrying about it and know several people who have done similar.

Re: Selling an untaxed car?
It's not changed in the last month. RFL isn't the main concern, it's usually just a pointer towards no insurance.citroenxm wrote:You better brush up on the Law!

How many ANPR cameras do you think I passed in 180 miles, I'd guess at about 200+.
