Hi-new member
At last found forum for XM's. I'm on my second. First 2,1td saloon now I have 2.1td estate. Love the cars great ride. I have a good mechanic locally that looks after my car for me. BUT I do have a proble. I am on my second starter motor in 6 months. Car starts great when cold, but when hot/warm it is a swine to start. There is no turn over when I turn ignition switch. Eventually starts. Anyone had similiar problem, if so how did you fix it????

Re: Hi-new member
Was it the same fault for both starter motors as that sounds like a sticking solenoid or brushes problem. Try giving it a clout when it's not working.

Re: Hi-new member
Thanks Dieselman.
Done that and it does start, just wondered if there was anyone knew of any other problem. The problem only happens when the engine has been running and then left for over 10 minutes, ie parked. Any one any ideas???

Hi Mike
It could be a high resistance connection on the inhibitor relay above the headlamps in the engine bay, when mine packed up it only would not start unless the car had been driven then parked up for a while, where i guess, heat soak caused the relay to loose contact, they should all be taken off and cleaned really then greased with a smear of copperslip and it should prevent any futur problems too.

Thanks Dean
Are those the purple and green relays? I have just replaced all of these but did not put copperslip on them. I will give that a try and let you know in a few days time. Thanks for all the help from yourself and dieselman. I will be a regular visitor to this site. I thought I (and the misses!!!) were the only nutter who loved XM's. i AM TRYING TO KEEP MINE ON THE ROAD AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

Re: Hi-new member
Your not alone, lots of nutters here it would help greatly if you could edit your signature to include your vehicle details, engine size, fuel type, transmission, model year that sort of thing, it makes coming up with an answer a whole lot easier as the fault you describe could be caused by any one of a number of common things depending on engine and transmission type.
If you have replaced the relays already they may not be at fault, im not sure which colour as every model is different but pay special attention to the wiring connectors of these relays, any corrosion here will not (obviously) be cured by simply changing the relays.
glad you found us and i hope the forum proves as usefull to you as it does for the rest of us

Hi Mike and welcome to the club. You have the best model, as long as its manual Check the earth connection from the battery to the engine, could be loose.
