Hi all
Not a good day, just recently my 18months old recon rack has developed some play and ive been neglecting the xm recently so ive jacked it up today to have a look, one of the gaiters has dropped off as it came with zipties holding it on (no surprise really) but the rack is totaly worn out, i was hoping the rack tensioner was loose but no such luck, tightening it even 1/16th of a turn just locks the whole thing solid but the pinion still has loads of slack in it

oh and the pinion creaks like hell too so its not going back on the road untill i can afford to sort it out properly.
Then of course the rover i got with a cooked engine has for no reason started to smoke (oil burning) looking into pot one with the crank 180o btdc there is scoring on the liner

soooo for the first time in ages i have two cars...neither oif which work

Hi Dean
Sorry to hear of your woes, it must be the day for it, my BMW of 6 days broke down this morning, fortunatly at home, I think its the fuel pump (lift not injection). I have'nt had an XM break down on me for 5 or 6 years - but at least the beemer is easy to work on

.
This must be the first time in many years I have'nt had a spare vehicle, the MOT has expired on the white estate, due to the pig of an ABS fault, but will hopefully be back on the road on Wednesday. The wifes ZX has no insurance as I transferred it to the BMW.
Such is life

ah well what else would we be doing

, ive got to get the rack out of the xm and start tracking down a new one, the rover is in for mot tue so i will put some nice thick derv oil in it and that should help but i dont have the time or inclination to be rplacing the bore set right now, if i had the time to be working on engines like that i would be getting on with the turbo xm one, mind might have to if it does fail the mot. keeps me busy anyway.
Hope the problem with your beemer is cheap Peter!

I've been looking at some of the bills that came with it, unbelievable compared with an XM, one there for supplying and fitting new clutch .... wait for it... £251.80

Noo noo noo noo, its the last IDI engine with a proper injection pump, it does have a measure of electronic control but nothing serious. The later version E39 does have the dreaded common rail engine and goes wrong frequently and costs a fortune to repair.
Its not as good as the XM.

The old VP37 tends to have ECU issues as well.
Does it have a separate lift pump, I thought it was an integral vane pump.

Thats a shame Dean, that doesnt seem to have lasted long at all. I guess it only had a years warranty?
Well i missed that one earlier, a BMW Peter, whatever next ....
£251 for a clutch, seems cheap? We used to own a LR Freelander TD4 (the BMW engine), it had a clutch replacement in its service history .... £1200, scary!

yeah only one years warrantee, ive had a dig about and including the one on the car i have 3 racks so im building one myself.
£250 does seem cheap for a clutch all in and fitted but then rear wheel drive's are easier to drop the gearbox out of most of the time compared to front wheel drive cars.
I think Peter only got it so he could powerslide his way to tesco's once a week anyway, we all know he drives like a loon so this was the obvious conclusion i guess.

3 Steering racks! Thats a bit of a pain
Ah that would explain it
What does a Preg 5series look like? Is that the later, more rounded looking one? Im thinking probably the earlier shape given that it will be less complex?
Slightly odd ... The identicle car to the one Peter has just sold, the 2.1TD hatch, which is on ebay now, its being sold because the owner has bought a 5 series BMW ... i hope thats not the going trend for Xm owners now
