Nearly finished my first tank of diesel!

Post by ash2020 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 10:05 pm

Having now got almost the car of my dreams, R reg. 2.5 VSX manual estate, in a moment of madness I decided to fill the tank! It cost me 92 squid and I've been staring at the trip computer ever since (with the occasional look at the road ahead!).
That display really is lovely. It says that I have averaged 41 mpg over the last 560 miles. I'm hoping to make it to 620 before I put more fuel in! That's not even long trips, just running about.
Off to France on Friday so I will reset the computer and see what we get on some long stretches. What a motor!
Hoping to take some nice pics there, will post.
Andrew
BTW, How accurate is that trip computer likely to be? Obviously the miles are correct, but what about the fuel metering?

Hi Ash

I make a note of the mileage and zero the trip most times I fill the tank full.
Then I roughly compare this with the volume of fuel I get in.
I expect to get around 600 miles from 75 ltrs.
Far better than the 400 miles I got from the V6's.
Now if you fancied snailing around in a 2.1 you could easily manage 800 miles on a tank full.
I do not usually watch the trip computer but was tonight and it encouraged me to be a bit lighter with my foot.
I watch the instantaneous consumption figure.
On long runs I use cruise when I can, typically set it for 75.

That's very good isn't it?! The BX TZD Turbo Estate we did the BXagon Challenge in (2,760 miles over all sorts of roads) managed an average of 53 mpg. Best was over 64 on one stretch.

I have to say I get a little bit more than 500 miles out of a tank with my XM 2.0 CT.

But then it goes quite quickly. Which I like.

Not really, the BX tank is a 14 gallon tank, the XM tank is a massive 17 gallon tank!

Hey John, less of the "Snailling" around in a 2.1, Ill have you know the 2.1 on a MANUAL box has out excelled my expectations, and Im overly inpressed, the ingear accelleration is fantastic, and keeps up more then well with the modern "TDi" badged cars which I love!

I have to add, this is a 2.1 with NO Egr crap, or no "Cat" either and fully mechanical Lucas Pump! Im smitten, but still dislike the Lucas pump for its weakness

I get 700 miles out of a tank in my 2.1 auto, which isn't all that bad I thought. The manual one I had wasn't much better! But it was a lot quicker. The 2.5 is nice, super smooth, and for the power on offer, the economy of them is respectable. I like the 2.5, but I'll not be running out to buy one, if the right one comes along at the right money, I'll try it out again. I got my fingers burnt with that scrap 2.5, so its not fair for me to base my opinions soley on it.

Peter, how many miles can you get out of a tank in your 2.1 Manuals?

You wouldn't expect me allowing this thread to pass without making a comment would you :D I reckon that 1000 miles on a tank is easily possible with the 2.1, I have had 900+ on a number of occaisions when on holiday and pootling about at 40 or 50 mph, I usually get about 800 on mixed local and long journeys but I do live in a rural area and seldom venture into a large town. I usually get around 55 mpg on our north Scotland trips and you only need about another 3 mpg to give the magic 1000 miles.

This BMW is very educational as far as MPG is concerned as it has a direct analogue readout at the bottom of the speedo, the slower you can accelerate the better the consumption, driving deliberately carefully can improve you local fuel consumption by 10 mpg - I know its boring but I'm retired :D Its surprising how little throttle you need to take the consumption below 5 mpg, its only the fact that you are doing about 250 mpg down hill that gives you any sort of reasonable consumption. You have to drive it very carefully to even approach the mpg of the XM driven normally. The beemer is nice but XM still the best.

Hi Paul

No one particularly not Peter or you was the target of the snailing comment.
Just could not resist it. Has connotations of sailing along gently in a very comfortable XM.
I was just trying to point out that driving style is a critical factor in any XM model economy figures.
In my early XM days when my first 2.5 was newish (31k) I think I cracked the 1000 miles from the full tank.
On the same trip as Peter describes, North of Scotland to South Coast.
Did over 200miles after getting back before I filled up.
I put that economy down to a Sunday trip with little traffic in a car with good injectors.
There was also a more sedate driving style in those days as I was returning to driving after a 20 year gap.
In practice I believe that 2.5 and 2.1 fuel performance is very similar if the driving is similar.

I suspect you are right John, just if you have more power you are tempted to use it.

I like to do 133-ish kph on French autoroutes when I think 'people' are watching. At 1 a.m. I tend to do 170. I am pleased that my XM managed 206 kph 'in Germany' (not to be entirely recommended).... I don't mind if it costs a bit more to do 780 miles at an average of 108 kph (68mph) and 30.1 mpg but in 30 years of driving I've never caused a crash or had a ticket. But I am not wealthy and find the price of fuel a burden. What a fool. :)

But then again I'm yet to grow up.

;) I like driving my XM fast. I might be tempted by a V6 one day.

But my therapist might have something to say about that.
