Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Paid £350 for mine too!! 8-)
Three hundred and fifty - the price of a lavish dinner for six. If that is the limit people pay for an older but luxurious car they could still drive for many miles and years, while the dinner is a one-time affair, in a few years time it will be hard to find. The scrap heap will be its immediate future. And follow the fate of the Traction Avant, I remember, which were scrapped en masse by the French right after the appearance of the ID/DS series. So sad Image

Jan. XM are cheap cars here, but I'm sure will appreciate when numbers dwindle to really low levels, which can't be far away now.
Ebay used to regularly have ten XM for sale, now it's three to five and of the five on there now one is a long term classified listing and one was sold on there a couple of weeks ago, so that's three fresh cars in reality.

At least a couple of XMs in this condition, and if you buy them right you can make a start at tidying them up with the change.
Good answer. But I was thinking more along the lines of, What are these vehicles really worth, how does their value compare to other daily necessities, like a refrigerator freezer, a flat screen TV, 2 pairs of custom made shoes, 2 properly fitting designer suits, a German made dishwasher, a weekend holiday in Greece, a few consults with a marriage counselor, an hour in Las Vegas.
The conclusion can only be that there is no logic in how we spend/(ab)use our hard earned income. For someone acquiring a vehicle at a fraction of its original selling price - called depreciation? - there might be an advantage, to the buyer as well as the environment, seemingly, as it won't be scrapped right away. But what really is the other side of the story? How about the first buyer who suffers a huge write off in no time at all? Who foots the bill for that? The owner himself? The company? The environment?
I guess there is no immediate good answer. We make decisions based on what we think is good for us at this moment in time. I myself have bought cars, starting in the early sixties at prices teenagers could easily afford with their pocket money. A ton or more of iron and additional materials, nicely shaped and rolling, at the price of a night at a hotel. We harvest (rape?) produce and junk. Ad infinitum.
Well, most of this may be Image but I do support anyone and everyone who buys, preserves, keeps, admires XMs.
Sorry for the rant

I cannot see how this situation can keep going on; key resources aren't unlimited in their supply and it can only be responsible to maximise the life from any given manufactured goods rather than be fikkle vain and trendy but shortsighted. The throwaway consumer society has had it's day and the lost art of thrift being forced upon everyone due to the current economic climate keno bad thing.

For the time being with things the way they are we can enjoy champagne motoring at fizzy pop prices but it won't last indefinitely.

I fitted a heater into the lower radiator of an Austin Cambridge 1.5 BMC diesel I had. It was plugged into the mains overnight and car started first turn in the morning. I can't remember the name of it at present.

Huh. I was interested in this one until I read his "feedback left for others". Three items on 17th Sept 2009, an xm haynes manual, sodium silicant liquid glass, and some K seal, with the words "used to seal oil in water on a TD XM" and headgasket mentioned in the feedback. A warning for potential bidders, I think. Maybe this really is a spares and repair job, might explain why he hasn't bothered to MOT the car to improve the chances of a good sale. I wonder how long it has been off the road. A mileage check on the last MOT might be interesting.

Of further interest, I had a look at the seller of the sodium silicate. It is claimed to fix headgaskets for up to two years, and even longer in some cases! What then? Do the repair properly, as it should have been done in the first place. What a shame for a low mileage 2.5.

Well spotted Hydroman.
In buying 2.5's you cannot be too careful about the engine condition.
Oil in coolant might just be the regular failure that of a leaking oil cooler.
If though it is the headgasket gone then there is at least a 1 in 3 chance the head is cracked as well.
Replacement with new bits will cost more than the sellers perceived value of the car.
Replacement with secondhand bits is unfortunately a lottery as they are just as old as the failed item.
IMHO spare 2.5 engines on ebay are usually overvalued with condition difficult to verify.

Yes, John. He has mentioned that the oil cooler was recently replaced. Thats a good possibility. I have asked him a question accordingly.

Thanks

Hi Johnathan

Black XM's seem to attract a bit of a premium.
I would view the low mileage as something to research and understand why.
Mostly short trips with a warming engine will not suit a diesel.
Edit note:
I see from the last but one photo that it has most likely been driven by short people on lots of short trips.
A little unusual to see the drivers seat bolster seude worn through badly at such a low mileage.
I used to think that this type of wear was simply mileage based.
Then I realised that the further forward the drivers seat the more the seat belt hasp catches on the seude cloth.
