Thank you all for your comments and advice. As usual I'm flitting from one extreme to the other: After a 300 mile return trip from Sunday till this Tuesday, I realised what a truly lovely car the XM is, and that I'm really annoyingly attached to Battlescar - warts and all. So the damn thing has a stay of execution (at the risk of my sanity) and I'll see what I can do with her to improve things. Something is making a nasty noise that got progressively worse over the journey, so I suspect the wheel bearing is finally giving up.

I actually (and rather sadly) tested the MPG computer and was pleasantly surprised to see it's far more accurate than I thougt it would be. The computer showed an average of 39.5 and I measured just under 39. That was boringly keeping a slow 60-70 but not bad I thought. I'll have to push the V6 option until I'm better off

39mpg doesn't seem particularly good for a 2.1 when cruising, maybe the wheel bearing is dragging more than you think.

My diesel auto was into the 50s on a good run as the auto is geared a bit higher than a manual.

The AUTO DERVs are geared the same as the 12v V6 Petrols!!! Beleve it or not. !

Yes, the manuals do rev a bit higher, but the Manuals are even worse!!! When I had a 2.oi TCT Manual, I remember the thing revving at 4.5k at 80mph (Or it was 4k) were as the last TCT Auto was dooing 80mph at 3k

indeed they are, which is why they have a slower 0-60 time, they are pulling higher ratio's with 1 less gear, its all a trade off though, the higher gearing is probably there to bring the economy up and ballance out low speed torque converter losses with lower reving motorway runs.
