I saw a nice 2.1 TD Auto 605 on e-bay recently. No strut tops to worry about there then Peter.

Auto TD XM's are only geared very slightly higher than manuals, about 0.5 mph/1000 revs but are definitely slower, noisier and about 5mpg thirstier in general driving.

A bit low? Really? Hrrrrrrrumph. Well, to elaborate slightly, the first run of 150 miles was basically all motorway/dual carriageway and bar the first 5 miles and the last 10 miles. This showed me 42 average.
We had a 10 round trip in the new forest and then for the return leg we had about 75 miles cross country and the remaining 75 on the motoryway.
Someone said they had 50mpg - was that at a steady 55mph? I read somewhere that resistance to speed goes up in a cubed relationship at speeds above around 55. Maybe my 60-70 pushed it down a bit? I'm clutching at straws maybe - I didn't expect the XM to be that frugal.
I'm hoping for a rain free week to get to work on her and sort out some issues.....issues issues issues
By the way, I spotted two XMs and and a C6 on my travels

my 2.1td was around 40-45mpg as a town taxi with runs out into the sticks, oddly it always seemed the same i could after a year or so estimate exactly how many litres of fuel to buy to get me from a-b and back home, never understood why doing all town work got me 40-45mpg and motorway runs still got me about the same.
It was a mechanical bosch pumped car running lucas injectors, as when i changed the pump i never bothered to change the injectors.
the s1 v6 12v i have now does about 18mpg in town and about 28 motorway, but it may have sensor issues i dont know as hot starts are becoming impossible
