VIN numbers

Post by Dieselman » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:35 pm

I have been checking specs of cars according to VIN number and have 2.1td sorted as to the sequence, but can't work out the other engine variations.

Is anyone prepared to put their VIN up, or send it in PM so I can work out the sequence and build dates.

What is interesting is that contrary to popular belief, going by numbers I have checked so far, XM diesels didn't sit around a long time before being registered, it was normally only a few weeks from build date to UK registration.

three examples so far are:
  • Build 5.09.90........ 2.06.92....... 15.06.92
  • Reg 5.10.90........ 28.08.92....... 28.09.92
What is also available, but not on early cars, is the equipment the car came with. Interestingly it appears all the S1 cars I checked had antilock brakes, s1.5 didn't initially.

Here is how the VIN is laid out.

VF7Y*AF****AF****
My understanding is the VF7 means Citroen.
Y3 or 4 means Series-1 or Series-2
The first four **** are the model type,
the last four **** are the number in the batch (maximum 9999)

I used to create VIN numbers when I worked for the trailer manufacturer. I can't remember now how it works exactly, I think the VF is for France VF7 = Citroen, some of the letters were used to designate manufacturing plant, the year of production, and the cars production sequence number, eg the 3456th built etc.

But to get the ball rolling.

VF7Y3AT0002AT---- - I don't know the RP number.

2.1 Turbo SD Estate Automatic

VF7Y3AX0000AX---- - I don't know the RP number.

2.0 TCT Prestige Auto

VF7Y3AX0000AX---- - I don't know the RP number.

2.0 TCT

VF7Y4NW0000NW---- - RP 6654

2.1 TD Auto Estate - reg 31/3/95

VF7Y4NX0000NX---- - RP 6387

2.5 TD - reg 17/6/94

Edited: Production sequence number removed.

You are right about the Y3/Y4 being Mk1/Mk2.
The type code is the two alfa numbers.
AE = D12 Car : AS = D12 Estate
AF = Turbo D12 Car : AT/AU = Turbo D12 Estate
CU = V6-24v Car
CM = V6 Car : CN = V6 Estate
CH = V6 Car : CJ = V6 Estate
AX = TCT Car : AY = TCT Estate
AH = 2.0 Injection Car : AR = TCT Estate
AZ = 2.0 Injection - Car France only slugged to drop CV rating by 4

This is from the 1994 Model year book.
I have the same information for all subsequent model years.
I also have the detailed breakdown of the VIN coding somewhere.
It is not a good idea to put actual VIN's up on a website.
Reg No and VIN is all you need to apply for a replacement V5 which DVLA are happy to send to a new keepers address.
On this point I think we should also drop the members birthday listing from the forum for security reasons.

Thanks for that John, it all makes sense now.

I agree about not showing full VIN details and have edited accordingly. If they need further pruning let me know or a Moderator can do it.

Where are you pulling this information Will?

Service Citroen? They give details on everything when you enter in the VIN number.

Yes, from Service Citroen. I only found the correct link to use today, but it is useful for checking what a car has or is.

Put the VIN in and use the characteristics link on the left.

From what I can glean, mine and Pauls are possibly the oldest RHD diesel XM. I can't find any showing as older even by changing the build number unless anyone knows of an older one.
As I mentioned earlier, the RP number doesn't guarantee the car VIN number will be in sequence.
It appeared that some cars were pushed ahead for whatever reason, maybe parts supply for certain trims or maybe to fulfil customer orders instead of stock.

It probably meant they were registered first to a Citroen dealer rather than a customer. My 2.1TD sat around somewhere for a whole year betweem DOM and first UK registration.

Not he three I checked earlier, I don't believe any of them were dealer demonstrators. My own car was registered to the single owner that had it before me.
I wish I still had the VIN's of the two I had from new. I'm pretty sure the first one was an old stock car, but the later one was built to order.

ALSO Will Not ALL S1's had ABS...

Ive got a Manderin S1 on a J 1991 Plate, Turbo D base with NO ABS :D :lol: (This Model is here with me in works car park)

My first XM though, was a 2.oi Base, that did have ABS though..

Also IIRC correctly a year or so ago I went to see another white Base Turbo D XM in white, that also didn't have ABS...

I think the DERVs didn't sit for long as they were bought by companys, and were also appealing back then for the XUD 11 excellent MPG (Remember it was 1990 so it was around 70ppl..) and high refinement.

I remember the "Book Club" came to our works about 10 years ago, and he pulled up in a Manderin XM SED... I wasn't into them quite so much as now, but drooled..
