Battlescar - now scrapping 2.1 TD Mk 2 Auto

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Interesting Robert, i used the hollow shafts in place of my my solid ones from a turbo MK2 and they fit staight in, Citroen dont half make things awkward, why change the splines i wonder
Not quite Dean, the drive shafts on the s1 2.1 were solid, and the ones on the s2 2.1 are hollow. The solid shaft has 27 splines going into the CV joint and the hollow one has 39 splines.
Actualy i think i remember this but the whole shaft will swap over no problems although the shaft to outer CV splines are different, just the outer CV will not swap though your right.

Can you get away with having a hollow shaft on one side, and a solid on the other? Namely solid shaft coming from the box?

Its working so far, ive got a solid one on the passenger side and hollow on the drivers side and ive not noticed any change, mind you the last hollow one has to go on this year as the original is shot.

RIght, I may give this a try, see what the verdict is. I need to check when the ATF fluid was changed, I have a suspicion it wasn't all that long ago.

The CV joint I bought on e-bay was about £25 or so, a proper one for the hollow shaft is £89 before vat from some specialists! Same price to refurbish one as well.

I suspect that the hub splines are the same, and the splines on the diff are the same but the hollow shafts had to have more splines as they are fatter.

Yep, thats right, the hubs are the same on all cars, and I imagine the difs on all autos to be the same as well.

I would check my spare ones to be doubly sure Robert but they are at the yard.

Hollow drive shafts?! Cor blimey!

Need some advice really. Am I being too sentimental in thinking that scrapping the XM is such a bad thing? Don't get me wrong, it's not what I'm into at all (although I had no compunction over the Xantia to be honest) but I can't see anyone taking it on, especially when you consider that to make it 'proper' nice you're looking at a new door to remove dent, a respray on the two that were replaced, a possible re-jigging due to the same two doors having dropped, a new auto box, midly damaged sills, a broken nose cone, a very tatty and ideally needs replacing front bumper, a dodgy ABS.

Even if I give it away, it's going to be a lot of work and money to get her looking nice and I'm not convinced that'll happen, which means I'm putting off the inevitable. If I put her on ebay then I'll doubt she'll go for much and someone else will get the £s for all the bits whereas I could do with the cash myself to put towards my BXs.

I don't know, I really don't know. If she was a good example then I'd go out of my to make sure she went to a good home. If she was a Gold Ph 1 or 1.5 then I'd likely do the job myself for a keeper but it's gonna be one hardcore enthusiast to see it through to a restoration :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

I think this one has seen its day, if the body was tidy i would say 100% get a new valveblock in that auto and get it back on the road but the market for undriveable xm's isnt that great and with scrap being high i dont think you will sell it for more than the parts an scrapman will give you by as long way.
It is a real shame but i think you are doing the right thing, it is after all been offered for sale to try and save it with no takers.

At least it will go some way to keeping others on the road.
