2.1 TD Torque curve

Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

Citroen Service refer to the PHZ as: DIESEL FUEL AND 2,088L AND TURBO AND DEPOLLUTION AND (XT) where as the P8A is: DIESEL FUEL AND 2,088L AND TURBO

Both on early XMs, but don't know if depollution is EGR or Cat. Presumably both are non EPIC but could be Lucas or Bosch.

It was hard to guage on my XM as it was Auto but yours are Manuals aren't they Peter? Is that the turbo kicking in at 1800 you think?
Also, next time you're out, could you note what the rpm at 70mph and how acceleration in 5th from 50mph up to 70 (and beyond if you choose to do so) please?

The Haynes BOL shows different engines in the Mk and Mk2 but the later ones still have mechanical injection, until after January '96 then they went EPIC. Having had both Mk1's and 2's I can't say that I have noticed a lot of difference.

Not sure about the Jan 96 date for Epic pumps, mine were made either side of Whit weekend '95 and both have Epic pumps and no EGR :D , Kit

Well I'm only going from personal experience, four of mine were registered in Jan 96 and all have Bosch mechanical injection, anything I have come across registered after that date are EPIC. I do know however that my cars were made considerably earlier than that as they have the ordinary jubilee clip type radiator fittings the later ones having some horrible bayonet arrangement.

Geoff

None of mine had cats but in view of the problem I had getting a non cat front pipe I would think probably mine are the exception. Yes mine are all manuals, there does'nt seem to be a definite kick in point for the turbo, the power increases progressively from 1400 rpm but the increase becomes more rapid from 1800 but it doesn't feel like the 1900 where the power comes up all at once. How much of this is attributable to the turbo and how much from the natural increase with speed I don't know but I think the engine would would pull quite well without the turbo, I think the two inlet valves give it a considerable advantage at low speeds. I think mine reads 2400 rpm at 70 mph but I will check next time I use it

That's about right. The gearing is 27mph/1000 revs.

The 2.1 manual is very tractable, mine pull cleanly from about 1400 revs and the boost does start to be felt soon after...and the gauge moves as well...Oops..only on a series 1.. :D
At 50mph, I would definitely be in 5th gear and leave it there for acceleration, unless I really need to go quickly.

I don't have the luxury of one of those :( although I think the CX had one. I stay in 5th until it gets to just above tickover - unless going up hill, but I expect you like to make faster progress than me.

Hi all,no they do NOT pull well without the turbo. When my EPIC split the i/c to inlet plenum duct the power loss was dramatic as it was when the boost sensor nipple cracked.
And as for an EPIC WITHOUT EGR, Kit,i presume that it's a mod,it almost certainly didn't leave the factory like that.

In that case the turbo must be coming in at around 1400 rpm.

Turbo's don't cut in, they just provide a gradual increase in boost depending on the expansion of the gasses due to the volume of fuel injected.

I am quite well aware of that - just a turn of phrase, I have been running diesels and doing conversions since 1959, but there has got to be a point that the boost has built up enough for you to be able to start to feel it, on the 2.1 it is difficult to tell because of the steady increase in torque, the 1.9 has quite a marked sudden increase in power.
