Wanted: XM estate

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Wanted: XM estate

Post by maxg » Wed Sep 21, 2011 12:58 pm

Any variety considered, and willing to pay sensible money for a good one.

I used to have a 2.0i 16v auto which i got with only 43k on it, sold it on earlier this year at 63k, which of course i now regret! I replaced it with a BX which is better for round town here, and more fun, but it doesn't quite cut it for the longer journeys, so seen as we now have a little more space, i'm looking for a mile muncher to complement the town-car.

It will be used for transporting work gear around the country and family holidays. There was a dark green VSX with leather, A 2.0CT turbo at the CXM meet a few weeks ago with a broken bumper sitting just outside the cafe - i liked the look of that spec. I'd consider the CT turbo as mpg shouldn't be too bad on longer journeys?

There is also a 2.1TD manual estate in silver coming up at a dealer in the UK which i also like the sound of, looks like a good one, but I'm a bit concerned it might be slow.

So if there is anything interesting out there let it be known! A 2.5TD unlikely to need major engine out jobs anytime soon would be great, with leather! But i know they are rare now, so hence my anything considered stance.

Thanks
Max

Hi Max

As you say XM's are getting a bit thin on the ground now.
A particular car spec and condition may be difficult to find now.
On 2.1 vs 2.5 it is the available torque at a given speed that makes a real difference in actual driving.
A good nick 2.5 has a roughly 500 rpm edge here.
If your driving style typically uses that then the cars seem very different.
If not then you will get very similar performance and economy between the two types.
For a 4 pot the 2.5 also has unusual engine balancing that makes power output as smooth as a V6.
Leather was uncommon in any Mk2 diesel estate so waiting for that might be a show stopper.
Retro fit leather is always possible if the rest of the car is right.
There were also more 2.5's than 2.1 Mk2's but the 2.5's were typically driven harded so higher mileage.
I would suggest that you follow up the lead you have particularly as Citroen dealers tend to under value XM's as trade in cars.

Thanks for the thoughts here.
Yes i did think of Peter, i was aware it's his ideal spec for a car. it's a VSX too! i see he's got about 10 of them, surely he couldn't want another.

the simplicity of the 2.1 attracts me although i would be intrigued to drive a 2.5.

I used to drive diesels, my last being the 17TD BX estate which i thought was great, fast and torquey, and a load of fun. I'm on Petrol now though with my current BX, which i also like, but i like the way diesels can burble around at just over tickover, but also be very rewarding to drive on a manual through the turbo sweet spot and useful for overtaking etc or powering up hills.

I might be going up to Robert Smart here in Ireland to check out his collection, he's just had a couple of 2.1 manual estates in, but also got a range of others.

The more Xms you can try out the better, it makes deciding on an engine and gearbox setup much easier.

I am a big fan of the 2.1 TD. All of my Xms are now 2.1 TDs!

The best Xm buying advice I can give anyone is buy on condition, find the best you can afford, and then hope that is a pleasing colour, and the engine/gearbox set-up you want.

Hi Max

Just come back of holiday so only now seen this thread. The 2.1s are quite fast enough for me providing they are not auto. My requirement for a car is that it will go up almost any hill in top - these will and the low down torque is such that you don't really need an auto box because you rarely need to change gear.

Don't worry about revealing the car to me, I'm not in the market for one at the moment. :D

well I can now say i agree with all of that Peter, I took a trip up to see Robert Smart this morning, and glad i did, i got to drive the manual 2.1TD estate he's recently aquired and i really liked it, so different to the petrol auto i had, I think my tastes would be in line with yours regarding this setup, really like the diesel in the XM on a manual, and the turbo gives it nice pull accelerating and up hills. The reported economy is definitely a factor too. So that's the one i'm after i think. This one needs a new clutch and spheres re-gassing, but very sound otherwise. He's going to recommission it so i might take another trip up when it's done.

I also got to try his CXs, the Croisette has nice pull with the 2200 engine on the manual, in mid restoration, needs spheres, but his Athena although a little slower was amazing on the rough country roads. I'd love one of those one day.

Moving closer.. :)

Is Robert selling that green estate then, or is this another one of his or another one altogether?

A nice 2.1td manual is a very usable car, not as quick as a 2.5 but more reliable, better economy and no difficult to source or expensive parts.
