Using adhesive mirror on foglamps

My foglamps on my S2 are very poor, the silver backing has faded to almost nothing and the foglamps are no more effective than the sidelights in illuminating the road ahead.

I'm thinking about buying something like this:

It can only be an improvement. Just wondering if they are sealed units like headlamps or if they can be opened up, aided with a bit of heat from a hairdryer? Also can they units be removed without removing the bumper....when I was repairing the headlamp washers I managed to remove 2 bolts on the foglamps to give me a bit of room to get my hand in to hold the washers in place but didn't try to remove the 3rd bolt.

They mightn't be able to stick the heat generated by the bulbs too well.

I think that they are proper sealed units as well.

The easiest way to get these out is to take the front bumper off. If anyone has an easier method that doesn't involve taking the bumper off, please let me know!

I tried to open these up for the same reason when I put a new S2 bumper on my car, but they are well well sealed. I'd break the unit if I put more force.

On the other hand, headlights I found were easy to open up as the sealing material is more rubbery -the fogs were more a plastic-y material.

btw I resealed the headlights with standard silicone and they r perfect 2 years after.

Why were you opening up the headlamp units, did you do any improvements that made them brighter?

Well do share! What did you do to them....I'm finding my lamps quite dim even with Halfords extreme brilliant bulbs in them.

Be aware that Mk1 and Mk2 fog lamps are very different.
Mk2 are not sealed beam just clips and a seal like the XM headlights.
There is a brand new Mk2 fog lamp on ebay for about £15 BIN.
Been around unsold for a while now.
Mk1 lamp silvering seems to peel and deteriate due to condensation in the unit.
Mk2 lamp silvering seems to burn from bulb heat.
The H3 bulbs are now available a 1 Watt LED's but still not of any real use as fog lights.
H3 HID sets are also now on the market but I would expect the reflections off any fog to be horrendous
So no real solutions on offer beyond good condition reflectors.
Plenty of secondhand units with the current number of XM's being scrapped.

I wiped them with a damp soapy cloth, but would recommend just swilling them with soapy water as the cloth did peel a bit of silvering off, as you can see in one photo.

BTW. LHD lamps are the same reflector, just the fresnel lens is reversed and on later ones the lens is in the glass, not a separate plastic lens.

What about retro fitting one of these inside the XM fog lamp unit:

I have a Seat Leon as my other car and looking at the units I think they would fit inside the XM fog lamp unit.
