Well the whole back of the original lamp at the dip end is cut off and refabricated in heath robinson style with aluminium sheet.

The lamps are simply attached by 4 adjustable screws supplied with the lamp kit

I wonder would they fit if the lenses were pulled of, and shove them in that way?

Hi Robert,

 Why not buy this one off E-BAY for your R&D experiments with an old/damaged XM headlamp assembly and run a new thread with your finding's ?

Note, that the E-Bay one is for a high-beam fitment/position, also the back mountings look slightly different to the low-beam type if you compare them side by side (Photo#2) from the AMAZON link !

Edit:- I've just found the HIGH-BEAM type on Amazon where in Photo#2 of that link shows some DIMENSIONS
I hope it may be of help for you ?

:D

The main beam ones are identical in in dimensions apart from the lens which is deeper. Hella's website used to give dimensions. I know they do other DE lamps that are even more compact now.

They will not go in from the front as they are much deeper than the factory reflector, and the corners of the lamp mounts have to be relieved to fit in the case properly hence rebuilding the case in sheet metal, the lamps also have to be pushed to the outer edge as much as possible to avoid the vertical pattern on the lens as it messes up the beam pattern.

Mine look really tatty from the back and I want to tidy the front up, I'm going to mig up some alli sheet to fit nicely around the lamp and try to give it a factory look

It is interesting, but I suspect that some of you guys will be keener to do this than I! I will look into this only when I fail a MOT because of my HID conversion (My NI MOT is different from yours though).

That was my nose cone in 2006 and way over 100,000 miles ago,its got 375.000ish miles on it now, even the bonnet had a shine then.

Since then wife was reverse into by 4x4 whose spare wheel popped the corner of wing in broke sidelamp lens off and broke nose cone

Technically any HID lamp needs to have a washing system as well.

iirc the Hella lamps are 90mm diameter. I was thinking of buying some but wasn't sure they would fit and also want to retain the reflector look.
On my car where I cleaned the reflectors the light output is much better than on the other one and comparable with other cars.

I have another plan formulating, but will be sticking with halogen.
