Re: WANTED: Ignition barrel/lock and window
Thanks to all who've responded helpfully to my tale of woe. (BTW, the police have - amazingly - arrested the trio of scumbags who did this to my car and, apparently, four others in the area the same night).
I'm away on business 'til Saturday and can't immediately check the details of the ignition lock, wiring etc. but will get back to you when I've done so. However I'm wondering if the ignition/steering lock barrel from an Mk 1 will in fact fit my Mk 2 ? Sound unlikely from what I can gather.
Cheers - Mark

Re: WANTED: Ignition barrel/lock and window
Yes it will physically fit but one of the wire connectors needs extending and changing to fit a brown plug.
I dislike early Mk1 switches due to the design.
It uses more and smaller electrical contacts so is more likely to go faulty.
If your lock electrical wiring is undamaged/repairable then it is possible to swap just the lock body while retaining the correct car wiring.
Old and new must be same make (definitely works for Simplex)
There is just enough wire slack on an XM to do this without removing the wiring.
The lock is eased out of its housing to do this.
If your vandals have forced the keyway then it may not be possible to select the key position for lock body release.
If this is the case then PM me for further instructions.

I also have an ignition barrel/switch with key if you need it, not sure whether it's from a Mk1 or 2. How can I tell?

Re: WANTED: Ignition barrel/lock and window
Hi Ken
Check the wires/plugs.
If it has 3 equal length long wire pairs with Brown, Black & Grey plugs it is late Mk1 /Mk2 type.
Early Mk1 has a short wire pair with a Black plug and the same long wire pairs with Black & Grey plugs.

Re: WANTED: Ignition barrel/lock and window
Mine has a short pair with black plug and two long equal length pairs with black and grey plugs, marked Simplex, so early Mk1 then? if anyone wants it.

Re: WANTED: Ignition barrel/lock and window
Thanks Ken, but mine's a Mk 2 so yours won't fit.
And apparently the vandals were caught on a CCTV camera trying to steal one of FOUR other cars that night. Bastards.

Re: WANTED: Ignition barrel/lock and window
Although the car's not quite back on the road yet, thanks to all who've offered advice and parts, but especially to John who well beyond the call of duty and certainly friendship, suppled everything required and comprehensive advice on how to fit them.
A tremendous example of the camaraderie that exists in fora like this, our mutual appreciation of these unique (if flawed !) cars and in John's case, the will to keep them going.
The vandals will be in court next week and I'll be there to hear the verdict, although I suspect it will not fit the crime. Anyone interested in my wider thoughts on the subject of my vandalised XM can check out my blog: www.markswill.wordpress.com
Thanks again, John.
