Outstanding issues :
Sort cold-starting issue - either air-ingres and/or dodgy Glow-Plug relay and/or GP feed wires
Top of to-do list :
Change engine oil & filter
Change ATF
Fit replacement rad-fan motors and fan-blades
Refit sunroof motor, and seal mounting thread
plus other trivial odds & sods, that I can live with

I know you can get cable joiners, with screw-terminals, such that you can repair a snapped cable. Any idea what they're called ?jeastham wrote:

Re: Jonathan's SED auto
THIS sort of thing?
This is listed as a ZF 4HP14 gearbox but it looks the same as the xm's 4HP18 cable, they say its for the xm up to R.P53-- but the xm never got the HP14 box so it may be worth having a check of the part number.
joining probably will not be successfull unless you use a big crimp as used when making fishing rigs and solder it but even then it will bind on the cam and certainly wont pass though the outer.

I need to check how much inner-cable there is exposed, before deciding on whether to make a repair.
Barrel-clamps; that's the term I was struggling to come up with. That's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Might use the guts of a junction box; the type that come in strips, for joining electrical flex
Thanks

Response from seller of Kickdown cable, on Ebay :
"Hi, this is for a petrol car only, not a diesel."

Re: Jonathan's SED auto
I've had a look, and I reckon I can repair the cable that has snapped. There is enough of a run of exposed internal cable.
Just need to find a length of cable, preferably a long piece, with the right termination, so I only need to make one join

Re: Jonathan's SED auto
Couldn't lay my hands on any steel cable, so had to make do with a wire, from some mains flex :

It'll do for now; until I can get some steel cable. If it don't; then it's the least of my worries; frankly,

That worked out nicely, a bicycle brake cable would do the job as its the same stuff with the same ends on i would think and then you only have one joiner. Tidy little bodge that

Re: Jonathan's SED auto
It now has a fresh MOT, valid until mid August 2013.
Had a complete new exhaust fitted, an outer CV joint (N/S), both drop-links, and a spot of welding, behind the N/S/F wheel, where ABC tyres had damaged the sill. Had to replace some bulbs, and the indicator/horn/lights stalk. Paid £50 for the MOT, and £120 (3 hours) labour, plus a 10er for a slab of lager for the lads who work there.
Pretty pleased with that; and they've done a tidy job with the welding

£170 for a year isn't bad, and none of those jobs will need doing again any time soon.
