WANTED 2.1TD S2 clutch cable

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Right, been to have a look at it. It's that plastic quadrant thing that has broken, so hopefully I can source a steel one.
Have thought about driving clutchless. Did it with a Mini once a long time ago. Problem is that I have to drive through town to get to my house and I can't think that I'll get through four sets of traffic lights and two roundabouts without having to stop at least once. Hopefully might be able to get a mate to tow me.

I have driven right through a major city at rush hour with no clutch cable. As long as the car is a good starter, it's no problem.

Mate with a tractor towed me the five miles to his farm this morning. Slow going, but the sun was out and it was kind of relaxing in a weird way, chugging along at 15mph with the sunroof and all the windows open.

I've dropped ColinXM a PM to see if he's got any of the steel quadrants left. Fingers crossed!

Had a reply form Colin P. He's thinking about making another batch of steel quadrants.

In the meantime, there is a clutch cable for a 2.0 petrol on eBay. If I buy that, could I take the quadrant off it to replace my 2.1SED broken one? ie, are the quadrants all the same, or do they vary model-to-model?
I need to get my car back on the road sooner rather than later.

The quadrants are the same, it's the cable length that varies.

So as not to 'Take-over' ( Colin P. Thread STAINLESS-STEEL 'QUADRANT' REPLACEMENT), I've posted here to get back on track your current problem !

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you

First pin came out OK, second one was halfway out when the plastic quadrant split.

So I reckon the car is scrap now. As far as I can tell, that was the last clutch cable for sale anywhere.

So I've come up with some further options/leads for you ;)

Option a) :-

Dieselman wrote:In the worst case ask a local machine shop to make one up for you or do one yourself from a block of steel or aluminium.
Got a lead on a 2nd hand cable, tracking it down Tuesday am, took the cable out this afters (in the blooming rain) , the induction pipes were easy ,they were all off for a leaking heater hose 2 months ago, and yup it is the plastic that gave way on the pedal side, still trying to get the cable off the pedal itself tho  but if there is a machined version already made still available from citxm Ime still up for it.
The /\ Quote taken from Colin P's thread (for ref.) !

So PM 'wiznime' to see if he still has that failed clutch cable (and is prepared to help you out) as the Quadrant should still be serviceable if indeed it was just the clutch pedal/lever end that failed the same as it did for Jorgy (See THIS thread) then all you need to do is use your short ended cable with the good pedel clevis on the end of it (So only one lot of 'Pin Extraction/Punching') as his is a 2.1 TD the same as yours !

Option b) :-

There's the SX Estate @ the Scrappers which 'Endorfin' posted up in THIS and if you check the link (to the E-Bay listing) within that thread, it confirms that indeed it's a Manual ;)

So hopefully they still have the vehicle and the cable !

Option c) :-

I wonder if 'Syd' possibly has one available from one of his XM's which maybe a PARTS-DONOR vehicle, best PM/check with Matthew first to see if he can remember if they where manual cars which are for breaking ?
MTXM wrote:Just to report that I called in to see Sid last week as I happened to be passing! I think there were about eight or ten XMs in all, although only two currently available for spares and one already quite heavily stripped. Apart from a couple of series two 2.5 s (saloon and estate) most of the cars were early 2.0i s. I was pleased to pick up a few bits of useful trim and Sid is a very nice and friendly chap, if a little eccentric! There were quite a number of other cars and bits and pieces, both Citroens and other marques, including a 1950's Bijou almost complete and even more excitingly a Renault Alpine and Lotus Elan tucked away in sheds. The most modern car Sid has is a very nice graphite coloured manual C6 that I think I might have seen at one of the CCC rallies last year. With regards, Matthew T.
PM me if you want 'Syd's' contact details ?

Also for additional clutch cable, part-number/length/type info see THIS thread too !

 If you don't get fixed up with the correct cable, but a donor plastic/nylon quadrant, make sure that you supportt the lower 'Clevis Arm' with a close fitting dia. socket (Just to allow the steel pin extraction) whilst your removing/punching out the pins !

If you just held/clamped the quadrant 'Clevis Arm' by say just using the jaws of a vice (which suspect you did), without the firm support of the lower 'Clevis Arm' it what caused it to break when punching/forcing out the steel pins ?

I hope all the info above may be of help for you (and others) too ?

:)
