The glow plug relay is attached to the battery box holder isn't it? Has two connections and a multiplug.
Must be that then.....The glow plugs / pre heat system certainly works. Oh well..I think i'll do the dash this weekend anyway. You never know might cure it!
Thanks Jaap for the PDF.

That is the worst coating of grass the car has had ever. No one else's is that bad. Little bar stewards!

Yes, because if the glow-plugs weren’t working at all it would be nigh-on impossible to start it...

Instruments are nice and easy to remove in an S1, just take care of the speedo cable - both when disconnecting it and be careful it doesn't try and hide from you by making a dash for the hole from which it emerges and promptly drops behind it. It can be a devil to fish it out again. Tie a bit of string to it before unclipping it from the speedo head...

I test every bulb using a small 12v battery before reinstalling them in the instruments - you'd be amazed at how many even new panel bulbs I find to be dead and disturbing old ones often kills them.

The gear indicator is on a piggy-back board attached to the main instrument board. It'll most likely be bad connections or dry joints on the display itself. I noted that Rohan's car often claims to be in 'F' when actually it's in 'P'...

Thanks Jim for the tip. Good idea about the tying string to the cable.
My LCD display can display a different language..or so it seems!
I have some bulbs so I'll try and do your test. It could be the bulb that's gone of course....he hopes!

It's a French car, let it communicate with you in it's native language...
Plus all the problems it berates you with just sound so much cooler!

Quite possibly Holmes. It displays a scrambled message then clears and is normal. Or a sharp thwack on the binnacle usually sorts it out. But it does flip in and out whilst driving.

Well a very productive day of fixing the spare wheel carrier.
It was looking a bit crusty, so got it off and i'm in the process of fixing it up. Just in time too. It isn't about to fall apart, but it certainly needed attention, especially if it was to get through another winter without serious further corrosion.
I'm not doing a full resto job on it, for that it needs to be sand blasted and ideally powder coated. So i'm making do with a bit of hammerite and under seal. Rust has been treated. I'll see how it goes and probably do it properly next year.

Also undersealed the boot floor. And popped some wax oil in the cross members the subframe is bolted on. Looks fine under there...fingers crossed. Once I get some Biltd Hamber, i'll stick that in the cross members to properly rust proof them.

And guess what is now showing it's orangey glow....the glow plug pre-heat light. I'm hoping it was the WD40 I sprayed in and around the relevant plugs and connections yesterday that has done it.

Excellent stuff Russ :D So, did you take the instruments out then or just gave the pluggery a bit of attention?

Is this the usual early car's "rear light not working" or "ABS not in use" nonsense?
I've had "slow down - high engine temperature" on the V6 24v once! :?
