Mazda's are the cause of my trauma about cars with no suspension...travelling with 3 on the back seat in a Mazda to Switzerland. After my dad's Renault 12 it became a bit of a night mare, me in the middle / so I wouldn't do that. Prefer the CX GTI for a rally.

With all this talk of Xantias and appreciation for early Xantias, I thought I better stick up some pictures of mine!

Strut tops are fine. That is muck and surface rust you see. You should have seen the strut tops in the Activa I had! They were bad. I also have a very good pair of spare hydractive strut tops from another Activa that are very good.

These are no where near as bad as some of the Xm strut tops I have come across.

Robert....what is going on with the rear sills in the door jams?. They look like there is some mischief going on! Rust.

That's one place the Xantia can go Russ and it's a very good idea to give any potential purchase a good examine in this area. It's all because there's a lapped double-skin here.

Robert's looks good at casual glance and generally the older S1s lasted a lot better here than many late S2s do. My S2 V6 is showing signs of starting there but my S1 Activa is as sound as a pound. S2 Estates suffer very badly in this area.

Andrew demonstrates why it's so important to check Xantia strut tops closely. Again, Robert's don't look too bad. When you can see the road through them or the sphere is sitting at a jaunty angle then it's time to worry...
