Strut Tops...

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Hi Mds

You have to measure up your present ones to be sure of size.
There does not seem to be any records from Citroen of the 23mm to 25mm strut rod change over for models other than 2.5TD's

These must be early strut tops, the underside flange is shallow.

Hi john.. a bit of info for you.n my mate has a 2.1 td auto s2 exclusive on an M plate.. it is in need of a nearside strut top.. no problem i thought but on closer inspection to my shock the car has the Larger Hole tops meaning the larger pistons are fitted.. there's no reason either to believe they are not original.. i mean that the larger top were fitted from factory...

so mds there's a good chance you have the larger struts fitted.. the only to tell is the diameter of the piston that's through the strut topmm its hard to tell with the nut in place too...

Hi Paul
I've come across that too on an S2 2.1TD VSX (IIRC it was an M or N reg.) with the larger sized strut tops and IMHO I'd have to say that they look well in keeping with the condition/mileage to see no reason why they hadn't been fitted from new !

Also take a look at THIS thread where strut top and piston/rod sizes where discussed a while ago !

:)

Hi All

Just one small comment that I would make on these recent posts to ensure that those unfamiliar fully understand.
The reference to larger pistons is not correct.
The diameter of the piston is the same for all XM front struts.
So hydraulically all have the same properties and operating force.
It is the strut rod and its top taper that varies.
Pulling down the gaiter and measuring the parallel part of the rod is the easiest check.
Thin rods measure 23mm dia, thick rods 25mm.
Each of these type of rods will have a different top taper as they reduce to the same size threaded end.
The strut head hole fits on the tapered section of the strut rod.
To fit and form an LHM seal the holes in the strut head need to be different sizes to suit each size of rod taper.

Having looked at these again, these are very early strut tops, pre-1992 certainly.

So just to clarify further, an early strut top has a 23mm dia hole in the top and a later one has a 25mm dia hole? Bloody Citroen, why didn't they just leave them all the same!!

No no, You've misunderstood, its NOT the hole in the strut top/mounting which the sizes are referring too (what John and I have explained many times), Its the actual piston/rod which comes out of the hydraulic strut (The chromed bit) which you need to measure to decipher whether you have the smaller type (23mm dia.) or the larger type (25mm dia.) of piston/rod which then determines which strut top mounting type you have/need !

Did you not read thro' the link in my previous post where its all be discussed before ?

I hope that's made it clear for you to understand now ;)
